Does the COVID 6-feet rule need an update? – Slate

Annie Beauregard/iStock/Getty Images Plus Since March, we’ve all been forced to rethink our handling of personal space. Dictating our distance from other humans is a rule of thumb that defines “close contact”: If you’re within 6 feet of someone for more than 15 minutes, it’s potentially dangerous. This is the rule that federal and state health departments use to determine whom needs to be contacted after someone tests positive for COVID-19, and it’s a rule (especially the 6 feet part) that many Americans are using to determine their risk when going shopping or seeing friends. Restaurant servers adhere to it by not lingering at tables; news anchors adhere to it on TV, their seats carefully spaced out. But as we move indoors in increasin...

Fargo season 4 review: A tale that sounds a little too familiar – The Verge

Through the lens of a lot of popular fiction, the story of organized crime in America is the story of American immigration. From The Godfather to Scarface to American Me and Gangs of New York, gangster dramas chronicle the stories of those who arrive on these shores to find they are immediately the underclass, denied the privilege and goodwill held by those already here and blamed for society’s ills. Shut out from earning the American Dream, they decide to take it, banding together with their fellow immigrants for protection and then power. They often survive, these stories argue, by putting the next wave of immigrants after them under their boot. The FX anthology series Fargo — which returned for its fourth installment this week after a three-year absence — has traditionally not b...

Neanderthal genes are a liability for COVID-19 patients, study says – CBS News

Genes that some people have inherited from their Neanderthal ancestors may increase the likelihood of suffering severe forms of COVID-19, according to scientists. A study by European scientists published Wednesday by the journal Nature identifies a cluster of genes that are linked to a higher risk of hospitalization and respiratory failure in patients who are infected with the coronavirus.  Researchers Hugo Zeberg and Svante Paabo determined that the genes belong to a group, or haplotype, which likely came from Neanderthals. The haplotype is found in about 16% of the population in Europe and half the population in South Asia, while in Africa and East Asia it is non-existent. Modern humans and Neanderthals are known to have interbred at various points in history, resulting in an ex...

Shannen Doherty on living with late-stage breast cancer: I try to treasure all the small moments – AOL

One of actress Shannen Doherty’s beloved rituals these days is to sit outside with her dog, a German shepherd named Bowie, with a glass of wine, watching her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, work in their garden. “I try to treasure all the small moments that most people don’t really see or take for granted,” Doherty told Elle for a story published Tuesday. “The small things are magnified for me. We have this endless well within us, and it’s just about continuing to dig in that well for the strength to face adversity — and so that we can also see all the beauty.” Doherty, 49, opened up to the magazine about her ongoing struggle with breast cancer. While she underwent treatment for the disease — surgery, radiation and chemotherapy — following her ini...

NXVIM benefactor Clare Bronfman who gave financial support to Keith Raniere faces sentencing – NBC News

An heir to the Seagram’s liquor fortune who provided financial support to Keith Raniere, the disgraced leader of NXIVM, is set to face a federal judge on Wednesday when she could be sentenced to up to five years behind bars. Clare Bronfman, the 41-year-old daughter of late philanthropist and Seagram's CEO Edgar Bronfman, admitted in a guilty plea last year that she harbored someone who was living in the U.S. illegally for unpaid “labor and services” and that she committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere, who was convicted last year of turning women in his group into sex slaves who were branded with his initials. Prosecutors want U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis to sentence Bronfman to five years in prison, arguing that her financial support was the underpinning of t...

The first known person to be cured of HIV has died of cancer – CNN

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as "the Berlin patient," was 54. Brown was considered cured of his HIV infection in 2008. In the year prior, Brown received a bone marrow transplant in Berlin, Germany, to treat a separate disease he had been diagnosed with: acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The bone marrow he received came from a donor whose genes carried a rare mutation that made the donor naturally resistant to HIV, known as CCR5-delta 32, which was transferred on to Brown. Brown remained HIV free -- but for the past six months he had been living with a recurrence of the leukemia that had entered his spine and brain, according to the International AIDS Society (IAS). "On behalf of all its members and the Governing Council, the IAS sends its condolences to Timothy's partner, Tim, and his fa...
