Not Your Average Jo

Fashion Text by Sadaf Shaikh. Photographed by Mallika Chandra After I watched Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of Little Women, many of its scenes — Laurie unbuttoning Amy’s smock in an airy art studio, Beth serenely playing the piano in Mr Laurence’s mansion — continued to dance in front of my eyes. But the sublime character development of Jo March, visually represented through the costumes, has been imprinted on my mind. In the opening shot, March runs through a crowd after successfully pitching an article to Mr Dashwood, her trousers visible underneath as the gathers of her unhooped skirt rush to keep up with her. Cut to the last scene, where she looks on intently as her labour of ...

Diamonds with Provenance

Verve People Yes, diamonds are forever but would you forever cherish, however brilliant, a stone that you know nothing about? Especially now that you have seen Blood Diamond and recognised the truth about “conflict” or “blood” diamonds? (These are illegally traded stones that fund insurgencies and warlords in war-torn areas.) “Diamonds, formed up to three billion years ago and brought to the earth’s surface by a miracle of nature, are symbols of the most important moments in our lives. There should be nothing opaque about Tiffany diamonds,” says Alessandro Bogliolo, chief executive officer, Tiffany & Co. “Our clients want and deserve to know where their most valuable, most cherished diamond jewellery is from, and how it came to be.” In keeping wi...

Rolling Stones threaten to sue Trump for using their songs at campaign rallies – NBC News

LONDON — The Rolling Stones are threatening President Donald Trump with legal action for using their songs at his rallies despite cease-and-desist directives. The Stones said in a statement Sunday that their legal team is working with music rights organization BMI to stop use of their material in Trump’s reelection campaign. “The BMI have notified the Trump campaign on behalf of the Stones that the unauthorized use of their songs will constitute a breach of its licensing agreement,” the Stones said. “If Donald Trump disregards the exclusion and persists, then he would face a lawsuit for breaking the embargo and playing music that has not been licensed.’’ Let our news meet your inbox. John Oliver Breaks Down COVID-Tied Eviction Catastrophe Just Around The Corner – HuffPost

John Oliver warned Sunday of a “COVID-related catastrophe that’s actually just around the corner” ― and it’s evictions. (See the video above.) The problem had already reached crisis levels, but the next few months could see the largest number of eviction cases ever, according to a report on “Last Week Tonight.” Stimulus checks, unemployment insurance and eviction moratoriums are running their course amid the coronavirus pandemic, leaving millions vulnerable when it comes time to pay the rent this month. Evictions are on the list of things you don’t want to see on the rise, Oliver said, “right up at the top, tied of course with Larry King’s penis. That thing going up is just not what our current situation requires.” Oliver’s grim forecast includes evictions via Zoom (ironic, he n...

on. People got complacent. People got a little bit overly confident in our ability to manage, You know more normally and people started to act like it was summer. They started to act like they wanted to go back to parties and do lots of big things like that. And it's coming back and it's fighting That's quite frank. So exactly tripled in an exact four week period of time. So that's a pretty significant rate of increase. Its been accelerating over the last 10 to 14. Excuse me days as well. I like to say this this really very worrisome rise and surge I was both predicted and predictable if you spoke to any of the epidemiologic modelers. And admittedly, it's a model. Back in April, they were pretty clear that we needed to maintain social distancing all the way through the month of...

Gov. DeSantis blames young people partying for coronavirus surge – New York Post

Florida’s governor has blamed younger people for the dramatic surge in coronavirus cases — claiming it’s impossible to stop them from partying. “If you look at that 25 to 34 age group, that is now by far the leading age group for positive tests,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a press conference Sunday, as seen on Wink News. He insisted you “can’t control” them because “they’re younger people.” “They’re going to do what they’re going to do,” DeSantis said. Cell phone data partially backs the governor’s theory — rebellious Floridians had begun leaving their homes more frequently even before reopenings started on May 4, the Tampa Bay Times said. Bars also take some of the blame, DeSantis said as he decried “widespread noncompliance” in packed establishments that “tossed aside” ...
