Netflix is slowly but surely creating a bunch of prestige TV shows to rival its competitors, and The Witcher is one of its latest shows to do just that. Like Game of Thrones, there’s a lot of politics, magic, and nudity in The Witcher, but The Witcher isn’t a rip-off of Game of Thrones by any means.
The Witcher is based on a series of books, and fortunately for fans, the author, Andrzej Sapkowski, has finished those books. As a result, fans can expect many seasons of The Witcher, so long as Netflix chooses to renew the show. Here’s a look at the characters that are joining the second season of The Witcher.
What is ‘The Witcher’ about?

While the show is largely based on the books, many fans of The Witcher probably know about it through the games. Like Inverse wrote, the games, which are also called The Witcher, were hugely popular and helped make the characters mainstream in the eyes of audiences.
The whole franchise revolves around Witchers, which are humans who have mutated to have supernatural and magical abilities. Witchers are almost always bounty hunters, and they spend their life going from town to town and picking up bounties. These bounties are almost always for magical and supernatural creatures that regular humans can’t deal with.
That said, the main character of the franchise, Geralt of Rivia, has a more interesting life than usual. He’s a Witcher, but he somehow gets himself involved in the politics of his time. This is unusual, since Witchers usually stay out of politics, but that’s Geralt’s life.
A recap of season one of ‘The Witcher’
The first season of any show has a tough job ahead of it, since it has to not only set the stage for other seasons, but it also has to hook audiences in as well as introduce the characters and the world they’re in. That’s what the first season of The Witcher did, and it did that by focusing on three main characters, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri.
Geralt, who’s played by Henry Cavill, was perfect for the role since he’s an outspoken fan of the games. On top of that, seeing Cavill play Geralt was a good enough reason for many fans to tune in to the show. That said, the majority of the rest of the cast were played by practically unknown actors. Yennefer’s played by Anya Chalotra, and Ciri’s played by Freya Allan.
Since the first season mainly served as an introduction to these three characters, not much really happened. The season ended with Geralt eventually met his daughter, Ciri, for the first time, but other than that, the season largely focused on what happened in the past rather than what’s happening in the present.
Who’s returning and joining Season 2 of ‘The Witcher’
Season two is exciting since the show is finally going to move forward in time, and as a result, a bunch of fan-favorite characters are finally going to show up. Furthermore, pretty much the entire cast is returning for season two, so that’s also a good thing.
One of the bigger additions to the cast will be Kristofer Hivju, according to Inverse. He’s best known for playing Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones, and he’ll be playing Nivellen in season two of The Witcher.
Yasen Atour and Paul Bullion will also be joining the cast, and they’ll be playing Coen and Lambert respectively. Furthermore, Aisha Fabienne Ross, Agnes Bjorn, and Mecia Simson will also be getting more minor roles in the show.
That said, earlier this year, Thue Ersted Rasmussen was cast as Eskel. However, due to scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Basil Eidenbenz got the role instead.
