Impact is promising a ton of surprises for tonight’s Slammiversary pay-per-view (PPV). The show opened with one of those.
The Rascalz (Dez and Wentz) had issued an open challenge for any tag team in the world. The assumption would be that Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, who announced they’re with Impact now, would accept that.
But that was a bit of misdirection as the call was answered by Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin. (It was awesome to hear their old Impact/TNA music, which was always a favorite of mine.)
The Motor City Machine Guns haven’t teamed since May 2018 in Ring of Honor. Shelley has been working around the world since then, even teaming with Kushida for one match in NXT. But Chris Sabin hasn’t worked since early 2019.
That was probably led to some of the story behind this match, with the more active Rascalz the team who had the momentum early on. But of course the Guns would come back. They’ve been working together over a decade. It may take a little time to knock that rust off, but they’ll never lose the chemistry. And when they got it going, they seemed unstoppable.
In the end, the younger team couldn’t keep up with the vets, who put away Dez & Wentz. Given the nature of the business, that likely means they’ll be sticking around a little bit. If this were a one off, they’d probably have put the full time team over.
Always great to see the Guns back.
