What is ‘Chucky’ all about?

The official synopsis for Chucky reads as
follows: “After
a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American
town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the
town’s hypocrisies and secrets.”

The
Chucky narrative has a long Hollywood history dating back to the ‘80s.
The series is based on the wildly popular Childs Play movie franchise,
which launched in 1988. In the film, a boy named Andy is elated when he receives
a Good Guy branded doll as a gift.

What young Andy doesn’t realize is that the doll is possessed with the spirit of a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray. Murder and mayhem ensue, with a few darkly humorous moments thrown into the mix. The rated-R bloodbath won with audiences and critics and scored a respectable 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The
original film spawned several sequels, including Child’s Play 2 in 1990,
Child’s Play 3 in 1991, Bride of Chucky In 1998, Seed of
Chucky
in 2004, Curse of Chucky in 2013, and finally, Cult of
Chucky
in 2017. Following the final sequel, a Child’s Play reboot
hit theaters in 2019. And now fans can look forward to a television show based
on the classic scary movie series.

The trailer opens in a toy store
after hours. A variety of playthings rest on shelves, but one space is
hauntingly empty. The eerie background melody is reminiscent of a music box,
but with a twisted quality. At the climax of the song, the trailer reveals a diminutive
figure – presumably, Chucky – standing in the shadows. He brandishes a knife
and cackles evilly.

The laugh that the doll lets out is
unforgettable. To the delight of horror aficionados, Brad Dourif is back as the
voice of Charles Lee Ray, aka Chucky. But this time, rather than terrifying
movie audiences, Chucky’s story will play out in episodes on USA and Syfy.

Deadline quoted Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks – USA & Syfy as saying, “The character Don and David created has terrified audiences for over 30 years. The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years.”

Who are the creative minds behind the show?

The ”Don and David” duo of which McCumber spoke is
Don Mancini and David Kirschner. Mancini originated the Child’s Play story
and co-wrote the script. Kirschner was a producer on the original film. Both
are back on board for more scares in the upcoming series. Writer-producer, Nick
Antosca rounds out the team on the show, which is produced by Universal Content
Productions.

“We are excited to once again partner with Nick
and UCP on this new Syfy series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to
television for the first time with the original creators,” said McCumber, according
to Deadline.

The outlet quoted Mancini as saying, “I’ve
long wanted to bring Chucky to television
and Syfy is the perfect network for us. The show will be a fresh take on the
franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is
uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the
original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now.”
