Stockton native and poet Brandon Leake is one day away from finding out if he is the winner of NBC’s talent competition “America’s Got Talent.”Leake, a spoken word artist, performed on the finals Tuesday night. He is one of 10 finalists on the show. The winner will be announced Wednesday. Fans can vote for Leake here. Voting closes at 4 a.m. Wednesday.During his performance, Leake talked about his daughter. The love he feels, his fears of being a father and his hope for her future.In July, Leake’s poem about the death of his baby sister and the love he felt for her moved judge Howie Mandel to give him the “golden buzzer.” That decision fast-forwarded Leake to the live shows.In early September, Leake delivered a heart-wrenching poem where he mentioned Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake. As a Black man who grew up on the tough streets on the southside of Stockton, Leake spoke about how his mother’s greatest fear is that he will become “America’s next most popular hashtag.”During the semifinals, which were two weeks ago, Leake performed a poem about his relationship with his father and how it impacted him growing up.Onstage, Leake is known as a poet, educator and motivational speaker.
