What’s in a name? A trend, if your name is Mark Hamill.
The “Star Wars” icon caused chaos in the Twittersphere over the weekend when he simply tweeted his own name and it instantly went viral.
Hamill, 69, was challenged by a fan (@LozzaBean12) to “just tweet ‘Mark Hamill’ and you’d get thousands of likes.”
To which the actor responded, “Mark Hamill.” Surely enough, since he tweeted Sunday evening, the tweet has been liked almost 560K times and has nearly 30K retweets.
George Takei even chimed in on the trend and tweeted, “Mark Hamill. And now we wait.”
Fans and other celebs joined in on the fun and started tweeting the star’s name.
Filmmaker Ken Olin wrote, “Will that work for anyone? Here goes: Mark Hamill.” German actor Flula Borg added, “‘Mark Hamill’ see you soon, thousands of likes!”
“Mark Hamill: *Tweets his name* Twitter: PUT THIS MAN ON TRENDING!” one fan exclaimed. Another said, “I love Mark Hamill.”
“Mark Hamill is a national treasure,” one user gushed.
Hamill gained fame for starring in George Lucas’ “Star Wars” saga beginning in 1977. The Oakland native played Jedi Luke Skywalker for more than 40 years. He also made a brief cameo in 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.”
A CGI version of Skywalker returned in Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” in the final episode of Season 2 (“Chapter 16: The Rescue”). “Talk about unexpected,” Hamill said about the casting during an appearance on “The Tonight Show” back in July.
“I had finished playing that part, and I never expected to do it again,” Hamill said. “I figured if they ever tell stories of Luke in that period, post the originals and pre-sequels, they would get an age-appropriate actor. So when Jon Favreau and [producer] Dave Filoni told me about what they wanted to do, I was just stunned.”
The Force will be with you Mark. Always.
