Should Johnson & Johnson vaccine side effects cause concern? – KCCI Des Moines

Side effects from the new Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines have temporarily shut down clinics in several states, including one here in Iowa. They say the side effects like dizziness, lightheadedness and nausea are not unusual for the J and J vaccine, and often happen in all kinds of vaccines. “Personally, right now we are not concerned with these reported side effects,” said Dr. Jeff Brock. The Mercy One infectious disease specialist is keeping a close eye on the new Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Last Friday, reports of side effects temporarily shut down a Council Bluffs vaccine clinic in Pottawatomie County. “The reactions were saw with those three was extreme lightheadedness.. to the point we had to lay them down. very dizzy.. extremely hot sweating,” said Matt Wyant with the Pottawatomie County Health Department. The Iowa Department of Public Health says it too is monitoring new side effects like dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint and nausea. The effects prompted a temporary shutdown of clinics in Colorado, Georgia and North Carolina. In Council Bluffs, they are now asking people to wait a half-hour before leaving the vaccine clinic to allow extra time for monitoring. Dr. Brock says all vaccines have side effects, and the J and J vaccine is no different. “There is always concern when we start hearing these side effects and we are monitoring. but at this point there is no safety concern. I would recommend my family members to get the J and J vaccine if that’s what they had available,” Dr. Brock said.Another problem facing Johnson & Johnson is distribution. The company is dramatically scaling back shipments to states by 86% next week and that could affect vaccine clinics planned for Iowa.
