Since it’s been a minute since royal fans have seen Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, all eyes were on the couple as they chatted during a recent video call about racial equality. One body language expert found Prince Harry’s mannerisms during the video chat particularly revealing, saying he was “awkward” and “eclipsed” by Meghan.
Prince Harry and Meghan discussed racism and equality
This week, a video of Prince Harry and Meghan participating in a video call for the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, for which they serve as president and vice president, was posted. The discussion with youth leaders revolved around justice and equal rights.
“We can’t deny or ignore the fact that all of us have been educated to see the world differently,” Prince Harry shared during their call. “However, once you start to realize that there is that bias there, then you need to acknowledge it, you need to do the work to become more aware… so that you can help stand up for something that is so wrong and should not be acceptable in our society today.”
“It’s not just in the big moments, it’s in the quiet moments where racism and unconscious bias lies and thrives,” Meghan shared during the meeting.
Prince Harry’s body language was a bit awkward
Body language expert Judi James shared her thoughts about Prince Harry’s mannerisms with The Sun, finding Prince Harry to be “awkward” throughout the call. “Is Harry looking increasingly like a fish out of water in the U.S.? His body language in this video link-up looks rather awkward, especially next to his wife,” she noted.
James continued, “Meghan showed glimpses of her skill of
speaking passionately about her causes and her ability to inspire people when
she was in the UK but with the safety harness of royal restrictions off she is
seen relating to and having empathy with young people in a way that Harry, with
his privileged upbringing, never could.”
James further pointed out his placement to the side of the
frame which gave Meghan “the space to gesticulate confidently and speak with
her eyes straight into the camera.”
She believes that Harry’s eye movements make him “appear distracted” while Meghan was speaking. “His eyes go to the right and then at one point he looks down at the floor, rather than looking visually focused and ‘on-message,’” she explained.
“Looking down is usually a cut-off gesture that suggests a
lack of confidence or a desire to hide momentarily,” James added.
Meghan was ‘mesmerizing’
James further noted how Harry is “eclipsed” by Meghan’s speaking skills and he let her take the lead in this area. “He is clearly eclipsed by her skills of speaking in a calm but passionate inspirational tone and it would be no surprise if he weren’t in awe of her talent to speak from the heart and convey messages that could be life-changing,” she explained.
The body language expert shared more of her thoughts about how Prince Harry behaved during the call with the Daily Mail, again explaining that he seemed awkward and “slightly trapped to one side, with no room to gesticulate and — at the start — no room to speak.”
She continued, “Meghan is mesmerizing but Harry either repeats her words or adds a ‘Yeah’ after she makes a point.”
