A police shooting near Paramount Studios in Hollywood Sunday night prompted a heavy police presence with the public told to avoid the area.
The LAPD tweeted that the community should stay away from the police activity on Melrose Avenue and Gower Street.
Detective Meghan Aguilar with the Los Angeles Poice Department says that officers with the Fullerton Police Department tried to take a sexual assault suspect into custody in the area of Plymouth Blvd. and Melrose Avenue at about 10 p.m.
As Fullerton police tried taking the suspect into custody, he took out a knife and officers used a taser to subdue the man but it was not effective, Aguilar said.
LAPD officers arrived and used less-lethal rounds on the suspect but were also unsuccessful at bringing the suspect down, Aguilar added.
Soon after that, police shot at the suspect outside the Paramount Pictures’ gate on Melrose and Windsor Blvd. but the suspect ran onto the lot and barricaded himself inside one of the studio’s buildings, according to Aguilar. It was not immediately known if the suspect was struck by gunfire.
Officers tried to negotiate with the individual to come out and just before 12:30 a.m. police got inside the building and took the suspect into custody, according to LAPD.
Aguilar says the suspect was taken to the hospital for injuries suffered during the incident but it was not immediately clear what type of injuries they were and what exactly caused them.
The investigation is ongoing. The area is expected to be impacted for several hours.
