On Tuesday, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that it would no longer publish six books due to racially insensitive imagery in their illustrations that “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”
“Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families,” the company told The Associated Press about what motivated the decision.
Following the announcement, sales skyrocketed of the books in question, which include “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” “The Cat’s Quizzer,” “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” and “If I Ran the Zoo.”
On Thursday, eBay announced that it would also be banning sales of the offensive Dr. Seuss books, with a spokesperson saying the company was “currently sweeping our marketplace to remove these items.”
