Kacey Musgraves opened the doors to the peaceful Nashville sanctuary she purchased following her divorce from musician Ruston Kelly in 2020 and gave a tour to Architectural Digest.
The 33-year-old country singer sought out a serene space when she bought the 3,500-square-foot home in the middle of her divorce and while writing her fifth studio album, Star Crossed.
‘I wanted a place that felt like me where I could express myself without having to think about another person and what they might want,’ she said. ‘This felt like a new beginning.’
Kacey kept some of her flare throughout the home, though, with a framed half-joint she smoked with Willie Nelson, a collection of crystals and a powder room covered in nude sketches from a local artist.

High times: Kacey also recalled a time when she was smoking marijuana with legendary musician Willie Nelson, a memory she never wanted to forget, so she made sure to mark the event with a spot on her wall
Musgraves took a step back from her usually maximalist style to create a space with interior designer Lindsay Rhodes that reflected a calmer, more focused mindset.
‘There are a lot of orbs and circles in the house,’ Musgraves said. ‘I was writing the album at the same time I was moving into the home, and there were a lot of themes that were kind of presenting themselves [in both projects].
‘This theme of full-circle-ness kept appearing, and I had some spiritual experiences that involved orbs—I had a psychedelic plant therapy session in which people from my past kept presenting themselves to me in the form of orbs.’
She added: ‘Without running the risk of sounding like an absolute psycho, it was really transformative for me.’
One thing that was important for Kacey while designing her space, was keeping her memories alive in every way possible. She showed off a photo of her ‘bada** mom’ smoking a cigarette while wearing a lettermen’s jacket and cheerleading.
Kacey also recalled a time when she was smoking marijuana with legendary musician Willie Nelson, a memory she never wanted to forget, so she made sure to mark the event with a spot on her wall.
‘He rolled this huge fatty,’ she recalled, ‘and we all sat around and smoked it with him, and then he said, “Save the rest for another time,” and I did.’
Take a seat: Kacey had an idea to cover the walls of one room with nude sketches, but was delighted to find a bathroom lined with charcoal drawings from local artist Hazel King
Still a retro inspiration: Musgraves took a step back from her usually maximalist style to create a space with interior designer Lindsay Rhodes that reflected a calmer, more focused mindset

Embracing her past: She shared a collection of framed photos of her grandmother with her dad while showing off her immaculate mansion
Kacey had planned to create a room full of nude sketches while on her house hunt, but was delighted to see that her vision had already started taking place in the home when she first toured.
‘I’d started collecting nude sketches because I had this vision of hanging them floor to ceiling in a bathroom, but I hadn’t done it,’ she said. ‘And then it was somehow here, already manifested, almost exactly how I’d pictured it. It’s one of my favorite things about the house.’
The Space Cowboy singer admitted she began collecting robin bird egg shells after they began mysteriously appearing when she first started dating poet Cole Schafer and he told her about a dream he had about a robin’s egg.
‘And then a handful of days later … he found a robin’s egg on his front doorstep,’ she said. ‘And a couple of months after that, we were visiting his parents in Indiana, and long story short, there was a robin’s egg on their front doorstep.’
Down to the details: Musgraves collects crystals and geodes, and admitted trying to be a minimalist when it comes to design isn’t always the easiest task for her eccentric mind
More is more: She’s tried to invoke more of a wabi-sabi aesthetic into her design elements, the Japanese concept of embracing beauty in imperfection
‘The interior of this home was my first time trying to embrace a minimalist mindset, and that is a challenge for me,’ Musgraves said
Inspiration: Kacey released star-crossed in September through Interscope Records, which immediately debuted at No. 1 on the US Top Country Albums chart

‘The interior of this home was my first time trying to embrace a minimalist mindset, and that is a challenge for me,’ Musgraves said. ‘I love collecting things that intrigue me, which doesn’t always bode well for [maintaining] a minimalist environment.’
‘You can’t put your finger on the exact style of this house, and I’d say the same about my music. Instead, it’s a big patchwork quilt of all these things that spark some kind of joy in me.’
She also showed off the exterior of her country home, with lush landscaping surrounding the expansive property, and a wooden deck overlooking a pool.
Her home was also equipped with a gym which included weights, a treadmill and indoor sauna, complete with neon light backlighting.

Kacey released star-crossed in September through Interscope Records, which immediately debuted at No. 1 on the US Top Country Albums chart.
The album focuses on her trials and tribulations following the end of her marriage to Ruston, whom she married in October 2017.
He was also the source of inspiration for her chart-topping record Golden Hour in 2018.
She’s since found love again in the arms of Cole Schafer, a creative writer and founder of copywriting agency Honey Copy.
Kacey and Cole, who moonlights as a poet named January Black, have each made a place on each other’s social media grids after spending the summer falling in love.
