STEVE: FIRST, TONIGHT, OPERATION WARP SPEED IS ENDING ITS SECOND WEEK IN IOWA WITH PHARMACY WORKERS VACCINATING PEOPLE IN THE STATE’S LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES. STACEY: BUT GOVERNOR REYNOLDS SAYS THE ROLLOUT IS NOT GOING AS EXPECTED. KCCI’S KAYLA JAMES SHOWS WHAT IS BEING DONE, AND WHY LOCAL PHARMACY OWNERS SAY THEY COULD BE A SOLUTION. KAYLA: ON WITH LIFE IN ANKENY IS SET TO GET THEIR FIRST DOSE OF THE VACCINE ON MONDAY, TWO WEEKS AFTER THEIR GLENWOOD FACILITY RECEIVED ITS OWN. >> TO KNOW THAT THERE IS A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL – THIS VACCINE IS A GLIMMER OF HOPE. KAYLA: A GLIMMER OF HOPE IOWA LEADERS WANT OTHER LONG-TERM CARE CENTERS TO SEE. BUT INSTEAD, ON THURSDAY, GOVERNOR REYNOLDS TOLD REPORTERS SHE WAS DISAPPOINTED AT THE PACE OF THE ROLLOUT. GOV. REYNOLDS: THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT IS HAPPENING IN STATES, ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. NONE OF US ARE HAPPY WITH THE WAY THIS IS BEING EXECUTED. KAYLA: GOVERNORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY VOICED THEIR UNHAPPINESS THURSDAY WITH THE CEOS OF WALGREENS AND CVS. GOVERNOR REYNOLDS’ OFFICE SAYS THE CHAIN PHARMACIES HAVE SINCE PROMISED TO BE MORE EFFICIENT. KCCI DID NOT HEAR BACK FROM WALGREENS BY FRIDAY EVENING. CVS TELLS US, THEIR TEAMS EXPECT TO FINISH ADMINISTERING FIRST DOSES IN SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES BY JANUARY 25. AS OF FRIDAY, THEY HAVE ADMINISTERED OVER 8000 VACCINES IN THE STATE. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE PACE OF THE ROLLOUT, NOTED BY GOVERNOR REYNOLDS, ADEL’S SUMPTER PHARMACY OWNER, LESLIE HERRON, SAYS, INDEPENDENT PHARMACIES ARE NOT SURPRISED. >> WE KNEW THEY DID NOT HAVE THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND STAFF GEARED UP AND READY TO DO THIS. KAYLA: HERRON SAYS, MANY INDEPENDENT PHARMACIES HAVE AN ADVANTAGE, ONE SHE BELIEVES WOULD HAVE THEM COVERING MORE GROUND. >> WE EACH HAVE A COMMUNITY BASE AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, THAT IT IS NOT A DAUNTING TASK TO GO TO ONE NURSING HOME OR THREE NURSING HOMES A DAY. KAYLA: LESLIE HERRON SAYS SHE AND OTHER INDEPENDENT PHARMACY OWNERS BELIEVE THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN APPROACHED TO HELP FROM THE GET-GO. BUT SHE ALSO NOTES, IT IS NOT TOO LATE. >> I COULD HAVE HAD EVERY PATIENT AND STAFF MEMBER VACCCINATED. AND I COULD HAVE WALKED BACK AND BEEN BACK IN AN HOUR. KAYLA: KAYLA JAMES, KCCI 8 N
