Iowa DPH announces 17 counties to receive Johnson & Johnson vaccines

The Iowa Department of Public Health announced Monday that only some Iowa counties will receive doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.According to the department, Iowa’s 25,600 doses of the vaccine will be distributed across 17 counties, including Dallas, Marshall, Wright, Tama, Marion, Clarke, Cerro Gordo, Buena Vista, Crawford, Pottawattamie, Plymouth, Sioux, Black Hawk, Linn, Muscatine, Louisa and Dubuque.The counties chosen to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have significant Phase 1B, Tier 2 populations, who are front-line essential workers in food, agriculture, distribution and manufacturing sectors and who live or work in settings that make social distancing unfeasible. Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky called the single-shot vaccine a game-changer for both health and logistical reasons.“Knowing that we’ve got a safe and effective single-shot option that doesn’t require extensive refrigeration should help that distribution and that kind of bottleneck that we’ve been seeing significantly in the coming weeks and months,” Gorsky said.Dallas County Health Department spokesperson Ann Cochcran said the department will coordinate with employers on the quick administration of COVID-19 vaccine to essential workforce who have been disproportionally affected by the virus. “Whatever type of vaccine is offered, please go ahead and take your turn as soon as you are eligible,” Cochcran said. “If you fall into a group that is eligible, go ahead and get a vaccine.
