How To With John Wilson Renewed for Second Season on HBO – Hollywood Reporter

The documentary/comedy series has earned rave reviews from critics.

John Wilson will keep exploring the ins and outs of everyday life for HBO.

The premium cable outlet has renewed its documentary/comedy series How To With John Wilson for a second season. The pickup comes two weeks after the show wrapped its critically acclaimed, six-episode first season.

“John’s lens is so deliberate and dear. Seeing the audience connect with How To has been an absolute joy,” said HBO Programming executive vp Amy Gravitt. “We’re eager to see what 2021 has to offer with him behind the camera.”

The show drew a modest linear audience, averaging about 236,000 viewers on Friday nights (a figure multiplied several times via streaming, replays and delayed viewing). It also received universal praise from critics; The Hollywood Reporter‘s Daniel Fienberg wrote that the series is “thoroughly winning,” noting that the season finale in particular made it a “special document.”

Wilson serves as writer, director, cameraman and narrator of the half-hour series, with episodes built around topics like “How to Make Small Talk” and “How to Put Up Scaffolding.” The show also ends up exploring the lives of New Yorkers, whom Wilson films obsessively, as well as his own place in the city.

Wilson executive produces with Nathan Fielder (Nathan for You), Michael Koman and Clark Reinking.
