Sophie Winkleman — the actress known for her roles on Peep Show and Two and a Half Men, and her marriage to Lord Freddie Windsor, the son of Queen Elizabeth‘s first cousin, Prince Michael of Kent — has opened up about her experience of marrying into the royal family.
Speaking to the Times, Winkleman revealed that the Windsors have been caring in-laws, even going out of their way to care for her in the aftermath of a serious car crash, in which she broke a foot and two bones in her back. Prince Charles, she says, took it upon himself to order a Clarence House chef to deliver her and her family two meals a day: “for weeks on end … It was life saving having this massive thing twice daily I didn’t have to worry about.” She also noted that Prince William asked a coworker in the air ambulance to “take good care of her,” and that Sophie, Countess of Wessex visited her in the hospital.
Perhaps that experience contributed to her overall impression of the royal family, which is overwhelmingly positive. “I’ve been incredibly welcomed with open arms by all of them. I haven’t had a single negative experience,” she said. “The Queen’s been wonderful, Prince Charles has been wonderful, Prince William’s been heaven. They’d never tell me off at all if I wanted to play some [racy] role. Everyone’s looked after me. Oh God, please don’t make me sound too gushing.”
Interestingly, her current feelings aside, Winkleman wasn’t raised to revere the House of Windsor. “I wasn’t fazed about becoming a member of the royal family because my father is sort of a socialist bordering on Marxist,” she explained. “So growing up, the royal family wasn’t part of the discussion. There wasn’t a home counties trepidation about them, although of course there was respect.”
The actress added that “definitely wasn’t trying to get to Ascot to meet Prince William” — just as well, as she managed to meet Lord Freddie regardless.
