‘Having Amal changed everything for me’: George Clooney says meeting his wife made him a better person… but admits it took her 20 minutes to accept his marriage proposal
George Clooney says his life irreversibly changed for the better from the moment he first met wife Amal.
The Hollywood star married human rights lawyer Amal at historic Venice palace Ca’ Farsetti in September 2014, five months after confirming their engagement.
But despite enjoying a hugely successful film career for more than two decades prior to meeting the now 42-year old, Clooney, 59, admits meeting Amal – with whom he is a parent to twins Ella and Alexander, three – altered his perspective.
True love: George Clooney says his life irreversibly changed for the better from the moment he first met wife Amal
He told CBS Sunday Morning: ‘There is no question that having Amal in my life changed everything for me. It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important than anything about me.’
Referring to his children, he added: ‘And then we had these two knuckleheads. It is very fulfilling and something I wasn’t at all…didn’t see coming.’
After developing a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, Clooney’s decision to marry came as something of a surprise to those outside his inner circle.

And he admits it took Amal several minutes before accepting a marriage proposal that even he admits took him by surprise.
He said: ‘We never talked about marriage when we were dating. I asked her out of the blue, took her a long time to say yes. I was on my knee for like 20 minutes, I finally said, “Look, I’m gonna throw my hip out.”
The couple were equally indifferent when it came to the subject of raising a family, until they discovered Amal was expecting twins.

He added: ‘We never talked about having kids, and then one day we just said, “What do you think?” We go to the doctor and you do the ultrasound. They’re like, “You got a baby boy!” and I was like, “Baby boy, fantastic!” And they go, “And you got another one there.”
‘I was up for one. Again, I’m old. All of a sudden, it’s two. It’s hard to get me to not talk and I just stood there for like 10 minutes just staring at this piece of paper going, “What? Two?”‘
In the same interview the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker said he’s been cutting his own hair for more than two decades.
‘My hair is really like straw,’ Clooney said of his thick, salt-and-pepper thatch. ‘So it’s easy to cut, can’t really make too many mistakes. So years ago, I bought a thing called a Flowbee.’
‘The thing with the vacuum cleaner and clippers, yeah. I still have it. My haircuts take, literally, two minutes.’
