Douglas County Health officials shared concerning news about COVID-19 variants on Friday. According to a press release from Douglas County Health Director Adi Pour, five variants of the COVID-18 virus have been found in the county: the California, New York, United Kingdom, Brazilian, and South African variants. The UK variant is the most common and the two known South African cases appear to be travel-related, the release said. Experts believe the variants spread 50-70% more easily than the original form. “The variants can cause more intense illness and some impact younger people more severely than earlier forms,” the release states. “It appears the majority of new COVID-19 infections now are caused by variants.”Pour said the good news is the vaccines still provide highly effective protection against these strains.As of Friday, 700 people in Douglas County have died from COVID-19.
