Daytime Emmys: Mark Hamill, Lupita Nyong’o Honored With Wins – Hollywood Reporter

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences continued handing out its Daytime Emmy Awards on Saturday and Sunday.

The organization is presenting statuettes in the children’s & animation and lifestyle categories this weekend in two live-streamed events. The Hollywood Reporter is among the nominees, landing a nom for best arts and popular culture program for its roundtable series, Close Up With The Hollywood Reporter, which aired on SundanceTV. (The Daytime Emmy Awards in several other categories, including daytime drama series, talk show, game show and morning news program, were handed out last month.)

The children’s and animation ceremony on Saturday was hosted by Raven-Symoné, a previous Daytime Emmy nominee. The Raven’s Home actress was joined by guest presenter and Odd Squad star Millie Davis.

The fiction and lifestyle ceremony will be hosted by Love on Sunday, marking her second hosting gig for one of NATAS’ Daytime Emmy ceremonies. Presenters joining Love will include boxing world champion and TV personality Laila Ali, Francisco Hernández Cáceres (Un Nuevo Dia), Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (A House Divided) and Jodi Long (Dash & Lily).

Throughout Saturday’s broadcast, Raven-Symoné as well as guest presenters asked winners questions following their acceptance speech, ranging from where actors drew inspiration for their roles to differences in decision-making based on working with children instead of adults.

Top performance wins for Saturday evening included Mark Hamill being honored with outstanding performer in a preschool animated program for his role as Vuli in Elena of Avalor, Sophia Grace winning outstanding younger performer in a children’s program for her role as Kristy Thomas in The Baby-Sitters Club, and Lupita Nyong’o landing an outstanding limited performance in a children’s program win for Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.

When asked what he enjoyed about voiceover work, Hamill shared: “I love the fact they cast with their ears and their eyes!” The famed Star Wars actor added that “it’s a character actor’s dream and I love the anonymity of it. I love the fact that they can’t see you. It liberates you to make bold choices you probably wouldn’t make if the camera were on you. I love the voiceover community. They’re some of the most gracious welcoming and talented people I’ve ever encountered in all my years in this business year.”

Concluding Saturday evening was the winner for outstanding preschool, children’s or family program — The Power of We: A Sesame Street Special Sesame Street. Producer Todd James expressed the importance of such a win after 2020 being a year of “great social unrest” noting that Sesame Workshop “decided to make this show to address those issues.”

James added that “Sesame Street is there for children to react, to address current needs for all our children worldwide. Sesame is always there to do that work.”

The Daytime Emmys are presented to individuals and programs broadcast between 2 a.m. and 6 p.m., as well as certain categories of digital and syndicated programming of similar content.

Organizers said this year’s awards honor content from more than 3,000 submissions that originally premiered in calendar-year 2020. The submissions were judged by a pool of more than 1,000 peer professionals from across the television industry.

Other awards will be handed out for best children’s animated series, culinary series, lifestyle series, travel, adventure and nature program, Spanish-language programming and young-adult series, among other categories.
