Kendrick Lamar Returns With ‘Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers’ – The New York Times

The five-year wait for a new album by Kendrick Lamar — the Pulitzer-anointed, voice-of-a-generation rapper — is finally over. “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers,” Lamar’s fifth studio LP and one of the most ardently anticipated new albums in years, was released overnight on digital services, with big hopes from fans and big questions looming about his next career steps. Lamar, 34, is one of the few major figures in the contemporary music scene — where a regular flow of new content is seen as a necessity — who can keep fans waiting for such a long stretch without sacrificing fan loyalty or critical prestige. Even after Lamar’s extended absence, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” is expected to make a sizable opening-week splash on the Billboard albums chart. Lamar cemented himself as...

Norm Macdonald left an hour of new material behind for one last special – CNN

Late comedian Norm Macdonald has left audiences an opportunity to hear him tell a few more jokes. In a tribute to Macdonald for CTV News, his sister-in-law Joyce Napier (the CTV National News Ottawa bureau chief) revealed that he recorded a new hour of material before his death from cancer in September at age 61. "It turns out Norm left an hour of new material behind, recorded in his apartment during the lockdown," Napier wrote. "It'll be a Netflix comedy special soon. So, we have that. Which is precisely what Norm wanted." Netflix later announced "Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special" will release on May 30. "Norm worked so hard on a new hour of material and wanted it to be seen. While this version of 'Nothing Special' was not originally meant to be the final product, Covid restrictions pr...

Young Sheldon Recap: Season 5, Episode 21 — George Leaving Mary – TVLine

Family drama had everyone on edge during Thursday’s Young Sheldon — an especially tense half-hour that saw George walk out on Mary after a heated exchange about her relationship with Rob. Mary’s feelings for the youth pastor had become painfully obvious to her husband, who was none too pleased to discover that the holy man paid her a home visit after the church shunned their entire family. Mary insisted that she and Rob were just praying, and they were, but anyone who witnessed that awkward moment after Rob concluded his prayer could tell you that there’s something brewing between those two. Just ask Missy! George had had enough. He made a beeline for the back door — and when Mary tried to stop him, saying that she’d made dinner, George turned around and suggested that Rob come b...

LAs treatment of Dave Chappelle’s attacker is latest example of lefty prosecutors incentivizing crime – New York Post

Dave Chappelle was finishing his set for “Netflix Is a Joke” at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl when a man from the audience, Isaiah Lee, jumped on stage and attacked him. In his possession was a switchblade, a lethal weapon. I don’t know about you, but this looks to me like a premeditated, felonious act. That’s how the Los Angeles Police saw it, too, and charged the perpetrator. How did LA District Attorney George Gascón treat the incident? As we have come to expect, not well. Gascón judged that Lee’s attack — a premeditated, albeit thwarted, assault with a weapon — was a misdemeanor. The maximum punishment Lee can get with these charges is 18 months in jail and a $4,000 fine. He is being held on $30,000 bond. With such a low get-out-of-jail threshold, Chappelle’s...

Netflix Pledges To Spend Subscribers’ Money “Wisely,” Respect “Artistic Expression” In Newly Revised Version Of Its Fabled Culture Deck – Deadline

Netflix’s fabled “culture deck,” which over the years has taken on the importance of the Magna Carta in tech and business circles, has gotten some updates reflecting the streaming giant’s current circumstances. The document, which is based on a PowerPoint deck created by Co-Founder and Co-CEO Reed Hastings, lays out precepts guiding employee priorities and the company’s overall approach. It has been posted publicly for years, revised at various intervals, and viewed more than 20 million times. Its section headings (“Highly Aligned, Loosely Coupled,” “Disagree Then Commit”) echo some of the pillars of the company’s uniquely articulated culture. Hastings elaborated on many of those tenets in his 2020 book, No Rules Rules. In a section called “Judgment,” a new bullet point...

The June 16 Season 4 finale will now serve as the series finale. Norm Macdonald Shot Secret Final Netflix Stand-Up Special Before Passing – Hollywood Reporter

One of modern comedy’s greatest talents made one final stand-up special before he passed away — and it’s been kept a secret, until now. Norm Macdonald, who died last September at the age of 61, privately shot an unreleased one-hour stand-up special. The acclaimed Saturday Night Live actor-comedian known for his deadpan delivery was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 but kept his illness private. He was working on new material for a Netflix special when he had to go into the hospital in the summer of 2020. “His test results were not good, so during the heart of COVID-19 pandemic and literally the night before going in for a procedure, he wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it — things went south,” Lori Jo Hoekstra, Macdonald’s longtime producing partner, t...
