Youll Go Blind If You Keep Doing That: Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Linked to Serious Eye Problems – Gizmodo

Photo: Getty (Getty Images) Drugs known for helping men with erectile dysfunction may come with a higher risk of vision problems than currently thought. In new research out Thursday, scientists have documented an association between three serious eye disorders and drugs including Viagra and Cialis; the findings might prompt the need for added warning labels on these medications, the authors say, though the individual risk for experiencing these complications does appear to be very small. Commonly used erectile dysfunction drugs such as sildenafil (sold under the brand name Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) primarily work by inhibiting an enzyme known as PDE5 that is found in the smooth muscle cells that line certain blood vessels. As a result, the drugs dilate these blood vessels and in...

UK Parents Told To Watch For Hepatitis Signs In Children After Unusual And Unexplained Rise – IFLScience

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is asking parents to look out for signs of jaundice in children following higher than usual rates of hepatitis (liver inflammation) in children, with no obvious cause yet identified. Around 60 hepatitis cases in children under 10 are currently under investigation in England, with a further 11 under investigation by Public Health Scotland since March. Usually in Scotland, there would be around 7-8 cases in a year in patients without underlying conditions. At the moment, the cause of the rise in cases is unclear. Several common viruses that cause hepatitis have not been detected, according to UKHSA. "Investigations for a wide range of potential causes are underway, includ...

I Reported on Covid for Two Years. Then I Got It. – The New York Times

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do, and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together. Two years after the coronavirus became the focus of all of my coverage as a science reporter for The Times (and all of my thoughts every waking hour), it happened: I tested positive for the virus. My case was mostly mild, as the virus generally is for any healthy 40-something individual. But the experience nevertheless gave me perspective I would not have gained from reading scientific papers or interviewing experts. Over the past two years, I have written hundreds of articles about the coronavirus — about asymptomatic infections, tests, our body’s immune defenses, breakthrough infections and boosters. I was interviewed myself dozens of times to answer questio...

What It Means for a Pandemic Like Covid to Become Endemic – The New York Times

For months, some American and European leaders have foretold that the coronavirus pandemic would soon become endemic. Covid-19 would resolve into a disease that we learn to live with. According to several governors, it nearly has. But we are still in the acute phase of the pandemic, and what endemic Covid might look like remains a mystery. Endemic diseases can take many forms, and we do not know yet where this two-year-old disease will fall among them. The coronavirus pandemic continues Global Covid-19 cases 40 cases per 100,000 per day March 2020 W.H.O. declares Covid-19 a pandemic 40 cases per 1...

Licorice may be a candy that can also cure cancer, study says – Study Finds

CHICAGO, Ill. — Offering a distinct, almost bitter flavor profile, licorice is a candy most people either love or hate. Well, just like medicine, a new study finds it might be wise to grin and bear the taste — because licorice could also be good for your health. Researchers from the University of Illinois Chicago say this polarizing candy that comes from a root may help prevent and even treat certain types of cancer. Gnanasekar Munirathinam, an associate professor in the department of biomedical sciences at the College of Medicine Rockford, authored these remarkable findings while studying substances derived from the licorice plant Glycyrrhiza glabra. At that time, Prof. Munirathinam and his team were focusing specifically on the effect of licorice on prostate cancer. Study authors sp...

They got illicit Covid-19 vaccine doses — and say theyd do it again in a heartbeat – CNN

Her stomach knotted in anxiety, Ogg was ready to say she was getting her first shot when actually she was getting her third. At the time, government rules didn't allow for third shots, even for immune-compromised people like her who failed to develop antibodies after two doses. "I was very nervous, because I am typically an honest person, but I wasn't going to tell them the truth if they asked me. There was just no way," said Ogg, 55, who was born with a cardiac defect and takes medicine to suppress her immune system so she won't reject the heart transplant she received four years ago. Many of them didn't want to talk publicly last year for fear of being shamed, or even criminally prosecuted, but immune-compromised people tell CNN they lied -- or were prepared to lie, or at the very least ...

Sugar substitutes may interfere with liver’s ability to detoxify, researchers say – New York Post

Two sugar substitutes, also known as non-nutritive sweeteners, may disrupt the function of a protein that plays an important role in detoxifying the liver and the metabolizing certain drugs, including blood pressure medications and antidepressants, a new study suggested.  These sweeteners are commonly used in foods and even some medications to give a sweet taste while providing an alternative to table sugar with few or no calories, according to nutrition experts.  “With an estimated 40% of Americans regularly consuming non-nutritive sweeteners, it’s important to understand how they affect the body,” Laura Danner, a doctoral student at the Medical College of Wisconsin said in the release. Danner, who presented the new research at the American Society for Biochemis...

Chemical Compound Promotes Healthy Aging – Add Muscle, Strength and Energy While Losing Fat – SciTechDaily

The study was conducted on mice, and more research will be needed to determine BAM15’s effectiveness for people. However, the findings have important implications for improving the quality of life for older adults, especially for the rapidly growing number of people with obesity. BAM15 helped geriatric mice with obesity add muscle, strength, and energy while losing fat. A recently discovered chemical compound helped elderly mice with obesity lose weight, add muscle and strength, reduce age-related inflammation and increase physical activity, a new study shows. The study, published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, provides the first evidence that BAM15, a mitochondrial uncoupler, prevents sarcopenic obesity, or age-related muscle loss accompanied by an increase ...
