DNR suggests skipping the bird feeder this year – WOODTV.com

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) — Following the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Menominee County, state wildlife officials are making suggestions to help prevent the spread of the virus. The avian flu is a highly contagious virus that can be spread from flock to flock, including by wild birds, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Brian Roell, a biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, explained how avian flu can spread among wild birds, specifically those who congregate, like vultures or eagles at a kill site. “Any of these birds that congregate are susceptible. Particularly waterfowl — that would be th...

Los Angeles Covid Test Positivity Rising Rapidly; Only Time Will Tell If Hospitalizations Follow Suit – Deadline

Los Angeles County reported 1,355 new Covid cases on Friday, continuing an upward trend that began about a week ago as the more-infectious BA.2 subvariant continues to spread. Last week, the 7-day average daily number of new cases in the county was 878. By yesterday, the county was averaging more than 1,000 new Covid cases per day. Rising even more than the daily case numbers is the 7-day average daily rate of people testing positive for the virus, a data point considered a more accurate indication of spread because, in addition to being an average, it accounts for rising and falling test numbers. That rate had been holding steady below 1%, but rose to 1.7% on Thursday and hit 2.4% Friday. The rate is still low overall, but more than double what it was one week ago and roughl...

Promising cancer vaccine in the works utilizing similar mRNA technology that combats COVID: Duke researchers – Fox News

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! COVID-19 vaccine technology doesn’t just fight viruses – it can combat cancer. Duke researchers find potential in a cancer vaccine based on the same messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology used by COVID-19 vaccines to combat a type of breast cancer that over expresses a protein called HER2, according to a recent Fox 8 report.  "It is a product which is RNA nucleic acid which encodes a specific protein and then that can be encapsulated in something we like to call a lipid nanoparticle, which is really a little fat bubble, and that can be injected into your body and sort of teaches your body what to go after immunologically," said Dr. Zachary Hartman, assistant professor in the departments of surgery, pathology, and immunology at Duke University ...

COVID symptom: COVID infection may increase risk of rare eye problem – Deseret News

COVID-19 could increase your risk for a rare COVID-19 symptom — rare eye blood clots. Driving the news: A new study found that patients with COVID-19 might have had an increased risk for “rare vision-threatening blood clots in the eye,” per Reuters. The risk lasted for months after infection. What they found: The researchers studied about 500,000 COVID-19 patients to see if they developed clots in the veins or arteries of the retina, according to the study published on  Thursday in JAMA Ophthalmology. Within six months, 65 of the patients had a retinal vein occlusion, which is a blockage of the small veins that carry blood from the retina of your eye. The clots were common in patients who had other conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pres...

More than 200 birds at Illinois forest reserve believed to have been killed by bird flu last week – CBS News

More than 200 birds at an Illinois forest preserve died in the last week, and authorities suspect they contracted the bird flu that's threatening flocks nationwide, the Forest Preserves of Cook County said in a statement. Though the virus is believed to pose a low risk to humans, farms across the country have had to kill millions of birds to stop the disease from spreading, according to The Associated Press.  The statement comes after wildlife biologists found "numerous dead birds" at Baker's Lake, approximately an hour northwest of Chicago, on April 6. The biologists sent seven cormorants to state pathologists the next day.  The forest preserve said it could not definitively declare an outbreak of H5 avian influenza among the birds because only the federal government can declare such in...

Surging Bird Flu Cases in the U.S. Have Come for the Bald Eagle – Gizmodo

Photo: Matthew Crowley Photography (Getty Images) Three wild bald eagles found dead in Georgia were confirmed to have died from bird flu on Thursday, increasing the toll from a recent surge in avian influenza cases that’s caused the death of tens of millions of birds in total. Across more than 25 states, massive numbers of wild and domestic birds are sick and dying from a new version of the avian influenza virus, which has caused multiple prior avian epidemics. It’s already the worst bird flu outbreak in the U.S. since 2015 in terms of domestic poultry deaths, and it’s burning through wild bird populations at a troubling rate. On Thursday, initial testing of more than 200 deceased waterbirds at Baker’s Lake forest preserve near Chicago, consisting mostly of double-crested cormorants,...

Mysterious liver illness seen in kids in US, Europe – The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Health officials in several countries are investigating mysterious cases of severe liver disease in children, and they think it may be related to a kind of virus usually associated with colds. The U.K. has been investigating at least 74 cases in which children came down with hepatitis, or liver inflammation, the World Health Organization said Friday. Three similar cases in Spain and a few in Ireland are being investigated, the WHO said. Meanwhile, U.S. health officials say they are looking into nine similar cases. All were in Alabama, but officials say they are looking to see if there are more elsewhere. “Given the increase in cases reported over the past one month and enhanced case search activities, more cases are likely to be reported in the coming days,” WHO official...

In March, people who are fully vaccinated contracted COVID-19 about as much as those not fully vaccinated – Yahoo! Voices

The state Department of Health Services released new COVID-19 data for the first time in three months this week surrounding the differences in illness, hospitalization and death rates among residents not fully vaccinated and those fully vaccinated. The DHS found that in March, those not fully vaccinated were being diagnosed with COVID-19 at a similar rate as those who were fully vaccinated. To be exact, people not fully vaccinated were diagnosed with COVID-19 at a rate 1.1 times higher than people who were fully vaccinated. The state attributes this finding to the omicron variant. Differences in hospitalization and death rates were also significantly smaller than previous months. According to March data, people not fully vaccinated were hospitalized at a rate 2.4 times higher than fully v...
