If You Cant Smell Anything, You May Be at Risk for Dementia — Best Life – Best Life

Dementia is one of the scariest risks associated with aging, affecting nearly 5.6 million Americans over the age of 65, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, there is no cure for any kind of dementia, including the most common form, Alzheimer's disease. Researchers and health experts work to help those who already have the condition, while simultaneously trying to understand how the disease presents itself—and what can be done to stave it off. One recent study points to a notable sign that could serve as a predictor of the disease, which may help healthcare providers intervene earlier. Read on to find out how your body might be telling you that you're at risk. READ THIS NEXT: Doing This at Night Makes You 30 Percent More Likely to De...

Monkeypox cases confirmed in Germany, France, Belgium – The Washington Post

Placeholder while article actions load More than 70 confirmed monkeypox cases have been identified in Europe as of Friday, with more suspected, according to researchers tracking the virus. The World Health Organization held an emergency meeting Friday to look into the spread of the virus beyond the areas of Africa, where it is typically seen. A team of academics tracking cases, working with data initiative Global.Health, showed the majority of confirmed infections had been reported in Spain, followed by England and Portugal. Outside of Europe, confirmed cases were also found in Australia, Canada and the United States. Globally, there were more than 50 suspected cases that had not yet been confirmed. Monkeypox, a sometimes-serious illness that can be passed to animals and humans, is us...

These viruses, which include Chickenpox, Monkeypox and Smallpox, are oval shaped and have double-strand DNA.Illustration: SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY (AP) New outbreaks of a seldom-seen disease called monkeypox are setting public health experts on edge. Several countries, including the U.S., have recently reported cases of the viral infection. No deaths are reported so far, and the risk to the general public appears to be low for now. But it’s possible something has changed in the virus, or its relationship to humans, that’s making it more transmissible. Countries with reported monkeypox cases The first U.S. case involved a Massachusetts resident who recently traveled from Canada, where there have been 13 suspected cases. On late Thursday afternoon, New Yor...

Australia says man returned from Europe probably has monkeypox – Al Jazeera English

Man in his 40s developed the illness, characterised by a distinctive rash, a few days after returning home to Sydney. Australian authorities have identified a probable case of monkeypox in a man who recently returned from Europe, as Canada confirmed its first two cases, amid a growing outbreak of the rare disease in non-endemic countries. The man in his 40s developed a mild illness a few days after arriving back in Sydney, showing symptoms clinically compatible with monkeypox, New South Wales (NSW) state health department said. The man and a household contact are isolating at home. Canada reported its first two confirmed cases of monkeypox on Thursday night. “Tonight, the Province of Quebec was notified that two samples received by the NML (National Microbiology Laboratory) have...

What is monkeypox and where is it spreading? – The Times of Israel

AP — European and American health authorities have identified a number of monkeypox cases in recent days, mostly in young men. It’s a surprising outbreak of a disease that rarely appears outside Africa. Health officials around the world are keeping watch for more cases because, for the first time, the disease appears to be spreading among people who didn’t travel to Africa. They stress, however, that the risk to the general population is low. What is monkeypox? Monkeypox is a virus that originates in wild animals like rodents and primates, and occasionally jumps to people. Most human cases have been in central and west Africa, where the disease is endemic. The illness was first identified by scientists in 1958 when there were two outbreaks of a “pox-like” disease in ...

NYC Health Department investigating possible monkeypox case in NYC after first case in U.S. recorded in Massachusetts – WABC-TV

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is investigating a possible monkeypox case. A patient being treated at Bellevue hospital could potentially have a rare illness. Outside of Africa, cases of monkeypox are relatively rare, but right now, there are about a hundred suspected or confirmed cases in eight countries outside Africa, including the United States. There are currently six Americans being monitored by the CDC for the illness. They were all on the same flight as a British person who tested positive for monkeypox earlier this month. The disease is similar to chickenpox and smallpox but less contagious, according to the CDC. The virus starts out with a fever and a rash, usually on the face, but it spreads. Muscle and backaches follow, alon...
