MILWAUKEE - An increase in severe hepatitis cases in children has Wisconsin health officials on alert. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is investigating at least four cases in children, including one who needed a liver transplant and one who died. The four children also tested positive for adenovirus, according to DHS. "Hepatitis can be very severe," said Dr. Greg DeMuri, a professor in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He specializes in pediatric infectious diseases. Which fruits are low in sugar? – Livescience.com

Which fruits are low in sugar? Fruit is a healthy way to add essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and water to your diet. Some fruits, including mangoes, grapes and bananas, have a higher content of natural sugars (fructose) than others. If you’re looking to control your sugar intake, or are on a low-sugar or low-carb diet, you may find it useful to know how much sugar is in your fruit.  While fruit can be a nutrient-rich addition to a healthy and balanced diet, many people aren’t aware that different fruits contain different amounts of sugar. Fruits like grapefruit, apples, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries are low in sugar, whilst mangoes, cherries, watermelon, bananas and grapes are all relatively high in natural sugar.  People with diabetes are often told they can’t eat ...

Scientists Warn That Climate Change Could Spark the Next Major Pandemic – SciTechDaily

As the global climate continues to warm, scientists predict wild animals will be forced to relocate their habitats – likely to regions with large human populations. This will dramatically increase the risk of a viral jump to humans that could lead to the next major pandemic.  Researchers anticipate that as the earth’s temperature continues to warm, wild animals will be compelled to migrate their habitats – most likely to areas with dense human populations – drastically raising the danger of a viral jump to humans, which might lead to the next pandemic. This connection between climate change and viral transmission is described by an international research team led by scientists at Georgetown University in a paper entitled “Climate change increases cross-species viral transmission ...

First case of human bird flu infection confirmed in Colorado – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

DES MOINES, Iowa >> A Colorado prison inmate has become the first person in the U.S. to test positive for bird flu in a recent outbreak that has led to the deaths of millions of chickens and turkeys, but federal officials say they still see little threat to the general public. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday evening that the infected man had been in a prerelease program and was helping to remove chickens from an infected farm. The man, who was under age 40, reported fatigue for a few days but has recovered, state health and CDC officials said in a statement. The man was isolated and is being treated with an antiviral drug. Other people involved in the bird removal operation in Colorado have tested negative, but they are being retested out of an ...

40% increase reported in L.A. County COVID cases – KTLA Los Angeles

Coronavirus infections are back on the rise in Los Angeles County with a 40% increase in cases over the past week, officials said Thursday. Local health officials have been continuing to monitor community-wide indicators for early alerts that transmission and risk may be increasing. And although the county remains at a “low concern” level this week, many metrics are trending in the wrong direction, the Public Health Department said Friday. The weekly case rate is now 126 new cases per 100,000 residents, meaning the county is again experiencing a high rate of transmission for the first time since early March. Hospitalizations are also slowly beginning to rise, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said, and although the numbers remain relatively low, they are incre...

Seroprevalence of Infection-Induced SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies — United States, September 2021–February 2022 | MMWR – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (.gov)

On April 26, 2022, this report was posted online as an MMWR Early Release. In December 2021, the B.1.1.529 (Omicron) variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, became predominant in the United States. Subsequently, national COVID-19 case rates peaked at their highest recorded levels.* Traditional methods of disease surveillance do not capture all COVID-19 cases because some are asymptomatic, not diagnosed, or not reported; therefore, the proportion of the population with SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (i.e., seroprevalence) can improve understanding of population-level incidence of COVID-19. This report uses data from CDC’s national commercial laboratory seroprevalence study and the 2018 American Community Survey to examine U.S. trends in infection-induced SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence dur...
