Man drinks dysentery smoothie to contract life-threatening disease, crippling diarrhea — for scientific research – TheBlaze

A 26-year-old man in Baltimore, Maryland, recently volunteered to drink a shot glass' worth of ominous, potentially disease-ridden liquid for scientific research, knowing full well it could cause him to contract an excruciating and life-threatening case of dysentery. It did, and what followed were "the worst eight hours" of his life. Yet Jake Eberts told Insider he'd do it all over again for both the $7,000 paycheck and the humanitarian cause. What are the details? Eberts downed the "dysentery smoothie" on April 5 as part of an 11-day inpatient study at the University of Maryland intended to test the efficacy of an investigational vaccine against Shigella, the bacteria that produces dysentery in humans. The study's aim was simple: to challenge 16 volunteers — some with the vaccine, some...

Three children die from hepatitis in Indonesia bringing global death toll to four amid outbreak – Daily Mail

Three children in Indonesia have died from a mysterious hepatitis which, if confirmed, would bring the global death toll to at least four. The country's health ministry said the victims died from 'suspected acute hepatitis' last month and were all located in the capital of Jakarta. Their symptoms included nausea, vomiting, heavy diarrhea, fever, jaundice, seizures and loss of consciousness — all tell-tale signs of the deadly liver disease. Tests are underway to confirm their cause of death. Indonesia has not officially logged any cases of hepatitis since the outbreak began.  The ages of the children have not been revealed and it is not clear if they had underlying health conditions. More than 200 child hepatitis cases of unknown origin have been confirmed worldwide in the mystery outbreak...

Unlocking the Mystery of Why a Plant Virus Is So Powerful at Fighting Cancer – Even Metastatic Cancer – SciTechDaily

Veronique Beiss, who is the study’s first author, prepares a tray of plants to produce cowpea mosaic virus nanoparticles. Credit: David Baillot/UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering Cowpea mosaic virus, a plant virus that infects legumes, has a special power that you may not be aware of: when injected into a tumor, it activates the immune system to treat the cancer—even metastatic cancer—and prevent it from returning. Researchers at the University of California San Diego and Dartmouth College have spent the last seven years studying and testing cowpea mosaic virus—in the form of nanoparticles—as a cancer immunotherapy and have reported encouraging results in lab mice and companion dog patients. Its effectiveness has been unrivaled by other cancer-fighting techniques examined ...

Time for a fourth Covid vaccine dose? Heres why medical professionals are skeptical – CNBC

There hasn't been enough research on how much protection a fourth dose can offer, medical professionals told CNBC. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Countries are beginning to offer a fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to vulnerable groups, but medical professionals are undecided on whether it would benefit the wider population. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has so far authorized a fourth shot only for those aged 50 and above, as well as those who are immunocompromised. And the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was skeptical of the need for a fourth dose for healthy adults in the absence of a clearer public health strategy. Those decisions came as a study from Israel found that although a fourth dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine offers ...

State, Federal Agriculture Services Confirm Case Of Avian Flu In Sequoyah County – News On 6

All poultry exhibition, public sales and swap meets have been banned statewide, effective immediately, after an avian flu case was confirmed in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry and the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed the positive case Sunday. Officials said the virus, known as the highly pathogenic avian influenza, was found in a Sequoyah County poultry flock. They hope the ban halts any potential spread of the virus. The ban is set to end July 30, unless more evidence proves the ban should be extended. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the recent virus detections in birds aren't a public health concern at this time. Officials stressed that it remains safe to consume poultr...
