‘We Could Be Feeling This for the Next Decade’: Virus Hits College Towns – The New York Times

The town’s Literati Bookstore launched a GoFundMe campaign to keep from going out of business, and created a virtual site for its famed “public typewriter” so customers could keep leaving anonymous typed messages, a company tradition. (“Oh how I wish for a coffee not made by my own hands,” someone typed online in May.) In State College, Pa., an estimated 65 percent of the community is made up of students at Penn State’s main campus, a local juggernaut that enrolls 46,000 students, employs more than 17,000 nonstudents and injects about $128 million a year into rural Centre County. The university has announced plans to reopen with double-occupancy dorm rooms and at least half of its classes in person, but it is still not known how many students will return. Also in question is the future of...

Heres What Doctors Know So Far About The Lingering Effects of Coronavirus – ScienceAlert

With over 2 million cases in the US since the coronavirus pandemic began in late December, there are now many people who have recovered from COVID-19. At the same, there have been reports of people who continue to have long-term side effects from the infection.   I am a professor and physician and I specialize in infectious diseases of adults. I not only care for patients with bacterial, parasitic and viral infections - including COVID-19 – but actively teach and perform research into diseases that infectious pathogens cause. Here I offer a summary of what is known today about recovering from COVID-19 – and where there are important gaps in our knowledge. Much of this information, which has been gleaned from studies that began after the 2003 SARS outbreak, is important for those reco...

Some COVID-19 patients arent getting better. Major medical centers are trying to figure out how to help. – NBC News

Major medical centers nationwide trying to understand why some COVID-19 patients continue to have symptoms weeks and even months after having been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Amy Watson, 47, is one of those patients. She's had a fever, she said, for more than 100 days. Amy Watson.Marc Leonard"It's been maddening," said Watson, a preschool teacher in Portland, Oregon. Since mid-March, her temperature has crept up to 100 or 101 degrees almost daily by midafternoon. She was diagnosed with COVID-19 in April, about a month after her symptoms — cough, congestion and extreme fatigue — began. Now, those symptoms have evolved into weeks of low-grade fever and a burning sensation under her skin. Full coverage of the coronavirus outbreak Watson's illness was never severe enough to warrant hosp...

Michigan health officials urge caution as state opens and coronavirus cases rise – Detroit Free Press

It's no time to get complacent. That's the message public health leaders want Michiganders to understand as businesses open up, restrictions are lifted and coronavirus case numbers begin to inch upward. For the fourth consecutive day Saturday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced more than 300 newly confirmed coronavirus cases. The seven-day average of daily new cases rose to 275 after bottoming out June 15 at 152.  After weeks of a downward trajectory in new coronavirus cases, a falling number of hospitalizations and COVID-19 deaths, Michigan is starting to see a rise once again.  "We are certainly concerned that as more businesses open up, there is a greater risk of spread of disease," said Lynn Sutfin, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and...

Why simple cloth masks without valves are better at fighting the spread of covid-19 – The Washington Post

The 3M company, which makes valve masks for such occupations, illustrates on its website how they work: inhaled air is filtered through the fabric part of the mask, and hot, humid exhaled air goes out through the valve. The system may be what you want when tearing out a kitchen for remodeling, but the valve defeats the purpose when you’re trying to slow the spread of a virus. Public health experts have been recommending mask-wearing to prevent respiratory droplets from spreading into the air when you exhale, speak, cough or sneeze, and the valves allow those droplets through. Medical masks, you’ll notice, do not have valves. “Any mask that incorporates a one-way valve (typically a raised plastic cylinder about the size of a quarter on the front or side of the mask) that is designed to ...

85 test positive for coronavirus after visiting Michigan bar – KTLA

People who visited a bar in East Lansing, Michigan, are being asked to self-quarantine because roughly 85 people contracted COVID-19 after visiting the establishment this month, a health official says. That number is up from the 34 reported Wednesday and is expected to rise, Ingham County Health officer Linda S. Vail told CNN. The Health Department is asking patrons who visited Harper’s Restaurant & Brew Pub between June 12 and June 20 to self-quarantine, and report cases of COVID-19, the department said in a statement. “Given the number of cases in this outbreak, we consider this a higher risk exposure than a typical visit to a restaurant or bar,” Vail said. “There are likely more people infected with Covid-19 not yet identified.” The bar followed safety ...

Uptick in COVID-19 cases could delay July 1 reopening in Contra Costa County – KTVU San Francisco

Several Bay Area counties considering delaying reopening as new COVID-19 cases rise Elissa Harrington reports. WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - It was a busy Saturday at Main Street Kitchen in Walnut Creek – well, as busy as it could be with limited tables and outdoor seating only. “Just this week we got this parklet which let us double our space while still maintaining social distance,” said General Manager Nina Saleh. She said the restrictions around COVID-19 forced them to completely change their business model, shifting to a takeout only menu, and now finally allowing guests to sit down, with tables six feet apart. “We want everyone to be safe. The health and safety of our guests and our staff is out number one priority,” said Saleh. Starting July 1st, Contra Costa County...
