Museum of the City of New York: Reduced but Reopening – The New York Times

Near the top of New York’s Museum Mile, north of the Cooper Hewitt, a gem from the Gilded Age, and the Guggenheim, itself a Frank-Lloyd-Wright-work-of-art, and the classical majesty of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sits the Museum of the City of New York. It, too, occupies a building of architectural distinction, a five-story, red brick and marble Georgian Colonial-Revival completed in 1932 and the home of the museum ever since. But it can be overlooked amid the star power of its cultural neighbors, even when it punches above its weight with expansive exhibitions like “New York at Its Core,” which examines the city’s history since 1609 or “Activist New York,” which reviews the city through the prism of social justice and political agitation. “If you had to pick one place to learn about...

Former CDC Head: Surge In Coronavirus Cases Due To New Spread, Not Increased Testing – HuffPost

Dr. Tom Frieden, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the recent surge in coronavirus cases across parts of the country is the result of the virus’s spreading, not increased testing, as President Donald Trump has argued. “As a doctor, a scientist, an epidemiologist, I can tell you with 100% certainty that in most states where you’re seeing an increase, it is a real increase,” Frieden told “Fox News Sunday.” He added: “It is not more tests. It is more spread of the virus. ... The numbers you’re seeing are just a tip of the iceberg of even more spread.” Trump said last week that he pushed administration officials to slow down testing to avoid the high numbers of confirmed infections. (White House officials claimed he was joking, but the preside...

Why simple cloth masks without valves are better at stopping the spread of COVID-19 – SF Gate

The 3M company, which makes valve masks for such occupations, illustrates on its website how they work: inhaled air is filtered through the fabric part of the mask, and hot, humid exhaled air goes out through the valve. The system may be what you want when tearing out a kitchen for remodeling, but the valve defeats the purpose when you’re trying to slow the spread of a virus. Public health experts have been recommending mask-wearing to prevent respiratory droplets from spreading into the air when you exhale, speak, cough or sneeze, and the valves allow those droplets through. Medical masks, you’ll notice, do not have valves. “Any mask that incorporates a one-way valve (typically a raised plastic cylinder about the size of a quarter on the front or side of the mask) that is designed to...
