253 new Idaho COVID-19 cases – Local News 8 – LocalNews8.com

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - Idaho officials reported 253 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday bringing the total confirmed and probable cases to 6370 as Idaho cities are making face coverings mandatory. Idaho had 365 new confirmed infections Tuesday, and the 14-day trend for the percentage of people testing positive for COVID-19 jumped from 3.4% to 11.4%, according to the COVID Tracking Project. The positivity rate is a measure of how widespread the disease is in the community, and Idaho guidelines say that number needs to be under 5% to lift restrictions. There are 5,786 confirmed cases and 584 probable cases in 40 of the 44 Idaho counties, according to numbers released from the local health districts and the state. See the chart below. Here’s What Recovery From Covid-19 May Look Like for Many Survivors – The New York Times

Many patients experience muscle weakness after lying in a hospital bed for so long, said Dr. Dale Needham, a critical care physician at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a leader in the field of intensive care recovery. As a result, they can have trouble walking, climbing stairs or lifting objects. Nerve damage or weakness can also whittle away muscle strength, Dr. Needham said. Neurological problems can cause other symptoms, too. Dr. Chen said that Mount Sinai’s post-Covid center has referred nearly 40 percent of patients to neurologists for issues like fatigue, confusion and mental fogginess. “Some of it is very debilitating,” he said. “We have patients who come in and tell us: ‘I can’t concentrate on work. I’ve recovered, I don’t have any breathing problems, I don’t have chest pain...

California officials blasted for prison coronavirus outbreak – KCRA Sacramento

California lawmakers harshly criticized state corrections officials' “failure of leadership” Wednesday, saying they botched their handling of the coronavirus pandemic by inadvertently transferring infected inmates to a virus-free prison, triggering the state’s worst prison outbreak.A third of the 3,500 inmates at San Quentin State Prison near San Francisco have tested positive since officials transferred 121 inmates from the heavily impacted California Institution for Men in Chino on May 30 without properly testing them for infections.“I don’t say this lightly, but this is a failure of leadership. This crisis is completely avoidable,” said state Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents the San Quentin area. The transfer from the stricken prison in Southern California “should have never happ...

New testing can detect COVID-19 in 45 minutes using saliva, blood or urine, Michigan hospital says – MLive.com

An adapted testing method could eliminate the need for uncomfortable nasal passage swabs, reduce costs and increase mobility of testing used to detect the coronavirus, says Metro Detroit’s Beaumont Health, whose researchers developed the testing methods. Beaumont Health researchers Dr. Laura Lamb and Dr. Michael Chancellor developed a testing technique to detect COVID-19 in under 45 minutes using urine, blood, saliva or mouth-swab samples, Royal Oak’s Beaumont Health said in a statement issued Wednesday, July 1. The doctors developed technology for rapid testing of the Zika virus nearly three years ago and applied the methods for use in COVID-19 testing. “Compared to existing technology,” study results using the methods have been “highly accurate” and are “relatively inexpensive to dev...

Cases spike in Sunbelt, other states back off on reopening – WRAL.com

By JAKE COYLE and JONATHAN J. COOPER, Associated Press PHOENIX — California closed bars, theaters and indoor restaurant dining all over again across most of the state Wednesday, and Arizona's outbreak grew more severe by nearly every measure as the surging coronavirus crisis across the South and West sent a shudder through the country. The run-up in confirmed cases has been blamed in part on what's been called "knucklehead behavior” by Americans not wearing masks or obeying social-distancing rules as economies reopened from coast to coast over the past two months. “The bottom line is the spread of this virus continues at a rate that is particularly concerning,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in dramatically expanding th...

138 coronavirus (COVID-19) cases now linked to outbreak at East Lansing bar – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Health officials have now linked 138 cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to an outbreak at a bar in East Lansing. On June 23, officials said more than a dozen people who visited Harper’s Restaurant and Brew Pub has tested positive for COVID-19. In just eight days, that number has ballooned by more than 100 confirmed cases. The Harper’s coronavirus outbreak has greatly contributed to the entire Lansing Region -- which includes Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham and Shiawassee counties -- being moved to the “high risk” category of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s MI Safe Start Map. The seven-day average of cases per million population rose from 4.9 on June 13 to over 50 last weekend. Of the 138 people who have tested positive, 119 of them visited Harper’s, officials said. The age...

NY county subpoenas people who wont talk to contact tracers – Fox News

Officials in New York are threatening fines and said subpoenas are being issued to a group of partygoers to compel them to speak with health officials about a gathering that could be responsible for a cluster of coronavirus infections. The party occurred in mid-June, according to media reports, in Clarkstown, N.Y., just north of New York City, where as many as 100 people were exposed to the outbreak. The host held the party despite exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, county Health Commissioner Patricia Ruppert said at a Wednesday news conference. At least eight people have been infected and have refused to talk with county investigators. Rockland County Health Commissioner Patricia Ruppert and county Executive Ed Day said subpoenas were issued to compel a group of partygoers to ...
