This is no joke: California man posts eerie warning a day before dying of COVID-19 – New York Post

A California man who contracted the coronavirus after attending a party posted a haunting warning on Facebook the day before he died. Tommy Macias, 51, began to show symptoms a week after attending a party in early June in Lake Elsinore, about 70 miles outside of Los Angeles, NBC News reported. On June 20, he penned the tragic message in which he expressed regret for failing to follow social distancing measures and mask-wearing guidelines and for putting his family at risk. “Because of my stupidity, I put my mom and sisters’ and my family’s health in jeopardy. This has been a very painful experience,” he wrote. “This is no joke. If you have to go out wear a mask and practice social distancing.” Macias, a truck driver, added, “Hopefully with God’s help I’ll be able to sur...

Asia Today: Cases rise in locked Australian suburbs, India – The Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A coronavirus outbreak in Australia’s second-largest city continued to grow Thursday and the Northern Territory detected its first case in three months. Northern Territory Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the man came home to Darwin on Monday from Melbourne before a one-month lockdown was imposed on 36 of its suburbs Wednesday night. Before the man tested positive Wednesday, the Northern Territory had last detected a case on April 6. Fyles said the man had spent two weeks in hotel quarantine in Melbourne on returning from overseas then spent “a couple of days“ with family in one of the city’s suburbs identified as a coronavirus hot spot. Fyles did not say whether the man was likely infected in Melbourne or overseas. Victorian state Chief Health Minister Bret...

Coronavirus in Oregon: 281 new cases on Wednesday, a record high – OregonLive

The Oregon Health Authority reported a record-breaking count of daily coronavirus cases Wednesday with 281, topping the previous record of 278 set June 17. The disclosure of cases comes as high infection rates occurred throughout central and eastern Oregon. The Oregon Health Authority on Twitter cited workplace outbreaks and increased testing as contributors to the high case count and urged citizens to practice physical distancing, wear masks and stay home when feeling sick. The record case count also comes as Gov. Kate Brown addressed in an hour-long news conference a new rule requiring Oregonians ages 12 and up to wear masks in indoor public spaces starting Wednesday. Compliance with the rule will be essential in determining whether businesses will remain open statewide and whether sch...

Coronavirus curve is no longer flat in Riverside County, official says – Los Angeles Times

Recent upticks in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have erased Riverside County’s progress in fighting the virus and the “curve is no longer flat,” Dr. Cameron Kaiser, the county’s public health officer, told the Board of Supervisors this week. Riverside County saw a sharp increase in cases in June, causing bed capacity in intensive cares to reach nearly 99% and the doubling rate of infection — the amount of time it takes for cases to double in number — decrease to almost 27 days. As of Wednesday afternoon, of the 417 hospitalized patients, 117 of them were intensive care. Kim Saruwatari, the county’s public health director, said the county has roughly 202 coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents, which is more than double the state’s 100-case threshold. Since early June, the number ...

Bay City salon may have exposed 75 clients to coronavirus – ABC 12 News

BAY CITY, Mich. (WJRT) - A Bay City hair salon may have exposed up to 75 clients to coronavirus over the past week after a stylist tested positive for the illness. Anyone who visited the Great American Man Cave at 1900 S. Wenona Ave. from June 23 to 30 should monitor themselves for coronavirus symptoms and potentially get tested, according to the Bay County Health Department. The hairstylist was experiencing mild coronavirus symptoms while working those days and some clients may not have been wearing masks. Health officials are reaching out to everyone who signed in and provided their contact information. Anyone else who was at the salon between those dates and didn’t sign in should call the health department at 989-895-4009 ext. 6. “We provide great service to our community, and the he...

Some consumer fireworks emit high levels of lead and other toxins, a new study finds – CNN

The study analyzed 12 different retail fireworks and found that once set off, five of them released particle emissions that could damage human cells and animal lungs. Consumers tend to forget about the toxins that are released, said Terry Gordon, study author and professor in the department of environmental medicine at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine. "You or your family is setting off a ton of fireworks, and you're doing it safely as far as physical injury is concerned, but people ignore that they're inhaling high levels of toxic metals," Gordon said. The toxins come from the different metals in the fireworks that make them turn different colors, according to the study. For example, the study said that blue fireworks can be made of copper and red fireworks can contai...

Harvard scientists: California needs to double testing to contain coronavirus surge – San Francisco Chronicle

California must increase its current daily testing more than twofold to control the worsening spread of coronavirus, according to new estimates released this week by the Harvard Global Health Institute. The adjusted goals come as cases have been swelling across the country, and some states have seen positive cases vastly outpace their ability to test. California has been keeping up with the spike in new cases by performing an average of 215 tests per 100,000 people per day, or about 85,000 tests per day.. ...
