The Pandemic’s Big Mystery: How Deadly Is the Coronavirus? – The New York Times

Instead, it had relied on a mix of data sent in by member countries and by academic groups, and on a meta-analysis done in May by scientists at the University of Wollongong and James Cook University in Australia. Those researchers looked at 267 studies in more than a dozen countries, and then chose the 25 they considered the most accurate, weighting them for accuracy and averaged the data. They concluded that the global I.F.R. was 0.64 percent. The C.D.C.’s estimate for the United States is lower: an I.F.R of 0.4 percent, according to a set of planning scenarios released in late May. The agency did not respond to requests to explain how it arrived at that figure, or why it was so much lower than the W.H.O.’s estimate. By comparison, 0.4 percent of the United States population is 1.3 milli...

Fauci: Pretty obvious the US is not going in the right direction – Business Insider – Business Insider

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US's top infectious disease expert, said this week that the US is not headed in a positive direction when it comes to controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus. "I think it's pretty obvious that we are not going in the right direction," Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told JAMA in an interview. He added that new research suggests the virus is now more infectious than it was before but that it does not seem to be making people sicker. The US has seen a resurgence in new cases since multiple states began reopening earlier than recommended. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. N.J. nursing home posted ‘We beat COVID 19’ sign after 26 residents died. Now they’re apologizing. – NJ.com

Susie Flanagan is still grieving the loss of her 91-year-old mother, who died from COVID-19 in April. So it really stings when she leaves her Lopatcong Township home and passes by a sign outside her mother’s former nursing home declaring: “We beat COVID.” Her teenage kids ride past it on their bikes. Her family simply can’t escape it. The sign drives home that Nora Giordano is no longer with them. That this resident of Genesis HealthCare’s Brakeley Park Center, 290 Red School Lane, did not beat COVID-19. “Do you have to do it in the neighborhood where people live who lost their family members?” Flanagan said. “I am just really appalled.” The disease caused by the novel coronavirus took Giordano’s life and the lives of at least 25 other Brakeley Park nursing home residents, according t...

More than 27.5 percent of COVID-19 cases in Jefferson County have been confirmed in the past seven days, according to the latest data from the Alabama Department of Public Health. Jefferson County, home to Birmingham, has seen 4,802 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date, according to numbers released by ADPH Friday morning. Of those cases, 1,321 were added in the past week, far more than any other county. Jefferson County’s weekly tally is more than double that of Mobile County, which added 633 cases, and more than triple that of Montgomery County, which has seen 426 new cases in the past seven days. Mobile and Montgomery counties, though both significantly less populous than Jefferson County, have each been more significant hotspots at different points since coronavirus came to Alabama. Jef...

People infected with coronavirus return to work and help spur Umatilla County’s record-breaking case count – OregonLive

Umatilla County saw one of the largest spikes in daily coronavirus cases this week with an average of 44 cases per day, the second most in Oregon, as the county’s top health official cited workplace outbreaks spurred by sick employees returning to their jobs as a major contributor. A county commissioner said some people also are refusing to wear masks. With just under 78,000 residents, the county saw 17% of Oregon’s total cases in the past seven days despite accounting for just 2% of the state’s total population. The surge in cases comes as state officials reported two days of the state’s highest daily counts of COVID-19 cases with 375 Thursday and 344 Friday. Among other counties, Umatilla had the highest single-day case count statewide this week with 88 on Thursday. The county’s dail...

A 24-year-old Covid-19 survivor is celebrating a different kind of independence this July Fourth – CNN

Freedom from Covid-19. "It feels amazing," Avery told CNN. "After knowing what all I've been through, it's still kind of hard to wrap my mind around. But I'm very thankful and grateful that I'm still here." Avery, who turns 24 on July 4, recently returned home after spending 76 days in a Kansas hospital -- many of them sedated and on a ventilator -- battling the novel coronavirus. "I'm going to be at home, safe and sound with my family," said Avery, a barber from Kansas City, Missouri, when asked how he would celebrate his birthday and Independence Day. "There will be plenty of other birthdays, I'm sure, down the line where I can make up for this one." For now, Avery is focused on sharing his journey with other people his age and warning them to take the coronavirus seriously, as cas...
