Scientists warn of potential wave of COVID-linked brain damage – Yahoo News

By Kate Kelland LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists warned on Wednesday of a potential wave of coronavirus-related brain damage as new evidence suggested COVID-19 can lead to severe neurological complications, including inflammation, psychosis and delirium. A study by researchers at University College London (UCL)described 43 cases of patients with COVID-19 who suffered either temporary brain dysfunction, strokes, nerve damage or other serious brain effects. The research adds to recent studies which also found the disease can damage the brain. "Whether we will see an epidemic on a large scale of brain damage linked to the pandemic – perhaps similar to the encephalitis lethargica outbreak in the 1920s and 1930s after the 1918 influenza pandemic – remains to be seen," said Michael Zandi, from UCL...

Orange County sets coronavirus record; young adults hit hard – Los Angeles Times

For the first time, Orange County residents reported more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day, with young people accounting for the bulk of new infections. “With cases of COVID-19 in California increasing over the last six weeks, I ask the residents and visitors of Orange County to please wear a face covering when you are in a public place and unable to properly social distance, as well as following hygiene and social distancing guidance,” Supervisor Michelle Steel said in a statement. “This is of the utmost importance to protect your health and the health of others, so that we can return back to normal as quickly as possible.” The spike was due in part to reports from backlogged test results. The county reported 1,028 additional cases Monday, 1,013 of which were from specim...

San Luis Obispo County Public Health Officials announced Tuesday that they expect San Luis Obispo County will end up on the state's COVID-19 "watch list" soon. Over the weekend, the county reportedly exceeded the state's COVID-19 case rate criteria. Health officials say the county has seen a rate of about 114 cases per 100,000 population over the last 14-day period and the state's threshold is no more than 100 cases per 100,000 population. "Our transmission rate doesn't tell the whole story, but it is potentially a leading indicator," said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. "These numbers are a strong reminder that we are bringing COVID-19 home-from travel, from work, from outings-and we need take all the necessary precautions to ensure that SLO County can remain open and our he...

After hundreds of experts urged the World Health Organization to review mounting scientific research, the agency acknowledged on Tuesday that airborne transmission of the coronavirus may be a threat in indoor spaces. WHO says coronavirus deaths could start to rise again after cases accelerated in recent weeks, shouldnt be a surprise – CNBC

It shouldn't "be a surprise" if the global death toll from the coronavirus begins to pick up pace again as the pandemic shows signs of accelerating across the globe, World Health Organization officials said Tuesday.  For the month of June, reported Covid-19 cases around the world have accelerated while the death toll has been falling, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO's emergencies program, said at a news conference at the agency's Geneva headquarters. However, WHO officials warn that there's a lag between rising cases and increasing deaths. It takes weeks after contracting the virus to fall seriously ill and potentially die from the coronavirus.  "Some of this may be lag, we may see deaths start to climb again because we've only really experienced this rapid i...
