Serious brain disorders found in mild, recovering COVID-19 patients – The Jerusalem Post

Over 40 coronavirus patients in the UK who were mildly affected or recovering from the virus have suffered complications ranging from brain inflammation and delirium to nerve damage and stroke, regardless of the severity of other COVID-19 symptoms, according to data published in the journal Brain on Wednesday, The Guardian reported. Scientists at the National Hospital, Queen Square began collecting data on patients with neurological symptoms in early March amid increasing reports of neurological issues associated with the virus. Of the 43 patients whose data was collected, 10 suffered from encephalopathies with delirium and psychosis, 12 suffered from inflammatory CNS syndromes including encephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and isolated myelitis, eight su...

Some prefer face shields to cloth masks. Experts are split on effectiveness. – NBC News

As new daily coronavirus cases in the U.S. keep spiking, government orders to require masks in public spaces are increasing, too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says cloth face coverings can help slow the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, but many people still resist wearing masks. Indeed, masks have become a flashpoint in the efforts to control the pandemic, with some people claiming they can't breathe well while wearing them. But what about face shields? Face shields are worn like hats, with a curved piece of plastic that comes down in front of the entire face. Health care workers have long used them as protective equipment. New York state counts face shields as an option to cover the face that can be used in lieu of masks, but experts are divided over how well...

July 7 coronavirus news – CNN

Coronavirus can lead to neurological complications, including delirium, brain inflammation, stroke and nerve damage, a new University College London (UCL) study published Tuesday in the journal Brain finds. While respiratory symptoms are commonly associated with coronavirus, for some patients in the study, neurological complications were the first and most significant indication that they had contracted the virus. Of 43 confirmed or suspected Covid-19 patients at the University College London Hospital, researchers identified 10 with delirium, 12 with brain inflammation, eight with cases of stroke and eight with nerve damage. They include a woman who seemed to recover and was sent home. “She was disoriented and displayed ritualistic behavior such as putting her coat on and off repeatedly. ...
