What is airborne transmission? WHO adds guidance on aerosols in coronavirus spread – NBC News

The World Health Organization has expanded its coronavirus guidance to include the possibility in certain circumstances of airborne transmission, in which the virus could be spread through tiny droplets that linger in the air. The update came Thursday after an open letter signed by more than 200 scientists pressed the agency this week to acknowledge the potential role that tiny droplets, or aerosols, play in airborne transmissions among people in crowded, indoor settings for prolonged periods of time. "There have been reported outbreaks of COVID-19 in some closed settings, such as restaurants, nightclubs, places of worship or places of work where people may be shouting, talking, or singing," the WHO said in its updated review of the evidence. "In these outbreaks, aerosol transmission, p...

(WKRN) — Statistics in multiple states show an increase in COVID-19 cases predominantly from people in their 20s and 30s, and now doctors say they are also seeing different symptoms among their younger patients. DeWine encourages Ohioans to get tested as state sees spike in coronavirus cases “Around the country, we’re seeing more young people come to medical care and often having to be admitted to the hospital,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an Infectious Disease professor at Vanderbilt University. Pathologist found blood clots in almost every organ during autopsies on Covid-19 patients – CNN

Dr. Amy Rapkiewicz, the chairman of the department of pathology at NYU Langone Medical Center, spoke to Erin Burnett on OutFront Thursday night. Some Covid-19 patients are known to develop blood clotting issues, but the degree and the extent to which that occurs was described as "dramatic" by Rapkiewicz. In the early stages of the pandemic, bedside clinicians noticed a lot of blood clotting "in lines and various large vessels," she said. "What we saw at autopsy was sort of an extension of that," she said. "The clotting was not only in the large vessels but also in the smaller vessels. "And this was dramatic, because though we might have expected it in the lungs, we found it in almost every organ that we looked at in our autopsy study," she said. Rapkiewicz's study outlining her findings w...

State: Dog has first case of coronavirus in Texas animal – KSAT San Antonio

AUSTIN, Texas – A North Texas dog has been found to have the first coronavirus infection confirmed in a Texas animal, state officials said. The Texas Animal Health Commission announced in a statement that the Fort Worth-area dog was confirmed to have the virus that causes COVID-19. A private veterinarian tested the pooch Tuesday as a precaution after its owners were confirmed to have COVID-19. The veterinarian reported the 2-year-old dog is otherwise healthy, according to the commission statement. The dog is not the first animal in the nation to test positive for the coronavirus. Ten other animals have tested positive for the virus, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website. State Veterinarian Dr. Andy Schwartz assured that there i...

Surry, Wilkes counties facing increasing opioid overdose levels caused because of coronavirus – WXII12 Winston-Salem

Surry and Wilkes counties are reporting an increase in opioid overdoses and overdose deaths in 2020 compared to recent years because of the coronavirus. Health departments across the country are noting this increase as an unintended consequence of the extreme social isolation and financial uncertainty people are facing.Surry County In Surry County, emergency services officials said they are on pace for more than 500 overdoses. That would be the most in a single year ever, a nearly 40% spike from last year, and more overdoses than all of 2016 and 2017 combined."The amount of overdoses that we are writing right now is probably not correct," said John Shelton, director of emergency services in Surry County. "The reason being that Narcan is so readily available. A lot of these are turne...

Oregon’s coronavirus count reaches record-breaking heights with 389 new cases and 6 deaths on Thursday – OregonLive

Daily coronavirus cases surged to record-breaking heights once again as the Oregon Health Authority on Thursday reported 389 new confirmed or presumed infections and 6 deaths. The record case count comes one week after state officials reported the previous high of 375, which was followed by three consecutive days of 300 cases or more. State officials cited workplace outbreaks and community gatherings as contributors to the spread of infection. As case counts continue to rise on average, state officials say they are concerned the state could run into shortages in testing kits and supplies because of increasing demand across the country. The state also reported Thursday that the number of Oregonians currently hospitalized with COVID-19 reached the highest level since April 15. However,...
