University of Houston researches create heated air filter that can kill coronavirus instantly – Fox News

Researchers at the University of Houston claimed to have designed a special air filter that can trap the novel coronavirus and blast it with heat to kill the disease on contact. Dr. Zhifeng Ren, director of the Texas Center of Superconductivity at UH, is the brains behind the project, the Houston Chronicle reported. Ren worked with Medistar CEO Monzer Hourani to bring about a "unique design" made from heated nickel foam, which was detailed in a paper published by Materials Today Physics. Researchers reportedly conducted tests at Galveston National Laboratory and found that 99.8 percent of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 was killed "instantly," after a single pass through the filter. The process does, however, require the foam to be heated at 392 degrees Fahrenheit. TEXAS S...

Researchers are launching a massive study to tell us how prevalent COVID-19 is in North Texas – The Dallas Morning News

Updated 7/10, 5:45 pm to reflect funding from the City of Dallas and Tarrant County. An ambitious new study will track the prevalence of COVID-19 in Dallas and Tarrant counties and answer pressing questions about how the disease is spreading through North Texas. The study, being launched Monday by experts at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Texas Health Resources, will recruit 44,000 adults, ages 18 to 89, to answer survey questions and get tested for COVID-19 and antibodies to the novel coronavirus. “There’s a lot of underrecognition of this disease,” said Dr. Amit Singal, the study’s principal investigator and a physician at UT Southwestern. “The first thing that we’re really trying to assess is exactly how many people have the infection and how many people have been exposed in the Da...

Pandemic parties rage on despite coronavirus crisis – South Florida Sun Sentinel

According to police reports, when officers first arrived at a large house in village of Royal Palm Beach on May 22 and knocked on the door, they were met by a drunken, belligerent man who claimed to be of legal age. Inside the house, the reports state, officers could see some 10 teens drinking. After backup arrived and the man who answered the door was arrested, officers allowed the 40 to 50 teenagers who had been in the backyard — “consuming what appeared to be alcoholic beverages and yelling at each other”— to leave.

Pathologist found blood clots in ‘almost every organ’ during autopsies on COVID-19 patients – KPRC Click2Houston

Autopsies on people who died of the coronavirus are helping doctors understand how the disease affects the body -- and one of the most remarkable findings concerned blood clotting, a pathologist says. Dr. Amy Rapkiewicz, the chairman of the department of pathology at NYU Langone Medical Center, spoke to Erin Burnett on OutFront Thursday night. Some Covid-19 patients are known to develop blood clotting issues, but the degree and the extent to which that occurs was described as "dramatic" by Rapkiewicz. In the early stages of the pandemic, bedside clinicians noticed a lot of blood clotting "in lines and various large vessels," she said. "What we saw at autopsy was sort of an extension of that," she said. "The clotting was not only in the large vessels but also in the smaller vessels. "And ...
