Coronavirus Cases Set Daily Records in U.S., India – The Wall Street Journal

U.S. infections set another daily record while new outbreaks spread across some Asian cities, challenging government efforts to contain the virus after relaxing social-distancing measures. More than 66,000 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the U.S. on Friday, the highest daily number since the pandemic began, raising the country’s total to nearly 3.2 million, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. accounts for about a quarter of the 12.5 million cases reported globally. ...

Mutation in dominant Arizona coronavirus strain may make it more infectious – AZCentral

Over 90 percent of novel coronavirus samples from Arizona in a recent genetic analysis have a mutation that researchers hypothesize makes the virus more infectious. So far, researchers have analyzed more than 1,400 samples of the virus from patients with COVID-19 and have identified a mutated strain that they believe could help explain the recent explosion of cases in the state. This genetic mutation affects the spikes on the outside of the virus that the virus uses to attach to and infect host cells. Because of the mutation's crucial location, it could change the way the spikes operate to infect people, making the virus more transmissible, according to David Engelthaler, co-director of the Translational Genomics Research Institute’s Pathogen and Microbiome Division. "That might be why it...

Coronavirus surge in Los Angeles is considerably worse than surge in San Francisco – SF Gate

Coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and test positivity are all trending upwards in most California counties, although some regions are seeing more dramatic increases than others. Los Angeles County is currently responsible for 127,358 of the state's 304,297 confirmed cases, and has been driving much of the state's recent increases. San Francisco County, meanwhile, has also seen an increase in the spread of the virus that caused officials to delay reopening plans, but SF is doing much better than LA, comparatively. Here's a comparison of the recent coronavirus upticks in San Francisco and Los Angeles, scaled for population. All data comes from individual county websites. Los Angeles Most recent seven-day average for new cases per 100,...

“A multisystem disease: How coronavirus affects the entire body – KSL.com

ATLANTA (CNN) — Coronavirus damages not only the lungs, but the kidneys, liver, heart, brain and nervous system, skin and gastrointestinal tract, doctors said Friday in a review of reports about COVID-19 patients. The team at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City — one of the hospitals flooded with patients in the spring — went through their own experiences and collected reports from other medical teams around the world. Their comprehensive picture shows the coronavirus attacks virtually every major system in the human body, directly damaging organs and causing the blood to clot, the heart to lose its healthy rhythm, the kidneys to shed blood and protein and the skin to erupt in rashes. It causes headaches, dizziness, muscle aches, stomach pain and other symptoms ...

Coronavirus Vaccine Race: Moderna or Inovio? – Motley Fool

The story of the tortoise and the hare ranks as one of the most beloved of Aesop's fables. In this fable, the hare gets out to a commanding head start in a race. But the slow-and-steady tortoise ultimately wins. We're seeing a different kind of race play out right now. Multiple drugmakers are scrambling to develop COVID-19 vaccine candidates. In terms of clinical progress, Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) appears to be neck-and-neck for the lead with a partnership between AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The U.S. biotech hopes to begin a pivotal late-stage study of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate mRNA-1273 later this month. Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:INO) lags behind somewhat, but is nonetheless a contender. The company recently announced preliminary results from a phase 1 study of its C...

Inside the detective-style hunt for missed COVID-19 cases – NBC News

Dr. Matija Snuderl has spent the last couple of months poring over tissue samples collected from the bodies of the recently departed. As a neuropathologist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, he’s usually diagnosing brain tumors and other brain diseases. But this effort goes beyond his typical duties: Snuderl is among a group of medical experts around the country on a detective-style hunt for missed cases of COVID-19. “At this point, it is critical to better understand the silent spread that was happening before the outbreak officially began [in New York],” Snuderl said. As cases surge in some parts of the country, doctors like Snuderl are working to better understand the early trajectory of the virus in hopes of discovering unseen patterns that could help inform future publ...

How To Protect Yourself From The Risk Of Airborne Coronavirus Transmission? : Goats and Soda – NPR

I'm hearing a lot of talk about the coronavirus spreading through aerosols — is wearing a mask in a grocery store enough protection? What else should I do to stay safe? Quick answer first: Going to the grocery store where you and everyone else is wearing a mask and keeping a distance from each other is still considered a low-risk activity. Go get your summer strawberries! For background, aerosols are tiny microdroplets containing the virus that can be expelled when we talk or breathe, and can stay aloft and travel on air currents. It's still unclear how much of a role they play in spreading the virus, but recently more than 200 scientists wrote an open letter asking the World Health Organization to pay more ...
