Yes, you learn by trial and error how to pinch the wire across the bridge of your nose so that your breath doesn’t shoot out the top of the mask and fog your glasses. You wear a mask because, in the operating room, contamination is a no-no. You wear a mask because if you don’t, the most vulnerable person in the room — the patient — might get an infection because of you. Recently, I was the patient. I underwent a simple hernia repair under local anesthetic. Being the patient, I didn’t have to wear a mask. Being a surgeon, I felt more awkward being in an operating room without a mask than being there without my pants. I asked for one, and the understanding nurse anesthetist got me one. While members of the operating team, the physicians and scrub nurses, do not have to maintain social dis...

Trump finally dons mask as US sets new virus case record – Yahoo News

Bethesda (United States) (AFP) - President Donald Trump finally yielded to pressure and wore a face mask in public for the first time on Saturday as the US posted another daily record for coronavirus cases, while Disney World reopened in a state hit hard by the pandemic. White House experts leading the national fight against the contagion have recommended wearing face coverings in public to prevent transmission of the illness. But Trump had repeatedly avoided wearing a mask, even after staffers at the White House tested positive for the virus and as more aides have taken to wearing them. Hours after the World Health Organization urged countries to step up control measures to rein in the disease, Trump donned a dark mask bearing the presidential seal as he visited wounded military veterans...

Bexar County young adults are contracting COVID-19 at higher rates. Here’s why. – San Antonio Express-News

When the first cases of coronavirus were detected in the United States, Samantha Tillman didn’t take it too seriously. In late May, after Gov. Greg Abbott rolled back lockdown rules and allowed bars in Texas to partly reopen, Tillman, 29, went out to lift a few cold ones, just because it had been so long. She patronized a few restaurants, went to the grocery store, the gas station. She had a birthday party for her son and took a family trip to Port Aransas. Her 67-year-old father didn’t hesitate to head downtown and stand with others defending the Alamo during a crowded Black Lives Matter pro...

Patient dies after catching coronavirus at COVID party in Texas – The Jerusalem Post

A patient in their 30s who contracted the novel coronavirus at a "COVID party" in San Antonio, Texas, passed away from the virus, local NBC affiliate WOAI/KABB reported. A COVID party is a party hosted by a diagnosed COVID-19 patient to see if guests get infected. According to Methodist Healthcare's chief medical officer Dr. Jane Appleby, the core idea of these parties is to see if the virus is real. "Just before the patient died, they looked at their nurse and said 'I think I made a mistake, I thought this was a hoax, but it's not,'" Appleby said, according to WOAI/KABB. Other states have also seen COVID parties being held, such as Washington state and Alabama. COVID-19 cases in Texas, including in Bexar County, where San Antonio is, have spiked considerably in recent day...

Coronavirus Live Updates: U.S. and World News – The New York Times

The country’s seven-day death average reached 642 on Friday, up from 471 on July 5, but still a fraction of the more than 2,200 deaths the country averaged each day in mid-April, when the outbreak in the Northeast was at its worst. And eight states set single-day death records this week: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Tennessee. South Carolina and Florida were among the first states to reopen and are now among the worst-hit states. Florida hit daily records twice in the last 10 days, and has surpassed 10,000 daily cases five times in that period, announcing 10,360 new infections on Saturday. In South Carolina, National Guard troops were expected to be called in to help hospitals in the state handle the increased strain on the health care ...

To get tested for COVID-19, contact your primary care physician or visit a no-cost testing site in Michigan.
