Man, 30, Dies After Attending a ‘Covid Party,’ Texas Hospital Says – The New York Times

A 30-year-old man who believed the coronavirus was a hoax and attended a “Covid party” died after being infected with the virus, according to a Texas hospital. The man had attended a gathering with an infected person to test whether the coronavirus was real, said Dr. Jane Appleby, chief medical officer at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, where the man died. She did not say when the party took place, how many people attended or how long after the event was the man hospitalized with Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. The man was not publicly identified. The premise of such parties is to test whether the virus really exists or to intentionally expose people to the coronavirus in an attempt to gain immunity. Gottlieb says some states opened too early | TheHill – The Hill

Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb said Sunday that some states in the U.S. reopened businesses too early, leading to surges in coronavirus cases across the country.  “I think that they felt they were out of the woods after that first wave passed, but this has really been a regional experience in the United State.  What happened is they reopened against the backdrop what was a lot of spread, they hadn't really crushed the virus in those states,” Gottlieb said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”  He said the states opened “too early” in his view.  “And people became complacent, especially younger people,” he added. “They were going out, not taking precautions.” WATCH: @ScottGottliebMD tells @margbrennan some states reopened "too early in my view" as peopl...

‘We opened too quickly, too soon’: Mayor Turner proposes a shutdown as city’s COVID-19 case count rises – KPRC Click2Houston

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on Saturday proposed a shutdown, arguing it was necessary as COVID-19 cases have climbed steadily in recent weeks. “We have to acknowledge the fact that we opened too quickly, too soon,” said Turner. “We have to acknowledge the fact that the numbers are continuing to rise. We have to recognize the fact that not everybody is going to put on this mask. Let’s just be real, even with the requirement. Knowing all of that and knowing what works, you’ve got to realibrate.” Turner’s comments came as coronavirus cases in the city and state have reached record levels, daily deaths have risen and hospitals have seen an increase in the number of patients with COVID-19. Texas set a record on Saturday, reporting 10,351 new cases, the Associated Press reported. ...

Los Angeles County orders closure of garment manufacturer after 300 employees contract coronavirus | TheHill – The Hill

Los Angeles County health officials have ordered the closure of a garment manufacturing facility where more than 300 employees tested positive for the novel coronavirus, including four people who died from the disease. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) said in a statement Friday that the order came as a result of an investigation into Los Angeles Apparel, a basics apparel manufacturer and distributor founded in 2016. The company employs more than 350 people, according to its Facebook page. DPH said that it initiated the probe after learning that three employees died of COVID-19 in June and that one succumbed to the virus in early July.  “The death of four dedicated garment workers is heartbreaking and tragic,” DPH Director Barbara Ferrer said in a stateme...
