As U.S. Grapples With Virus, Florida Hits Record Case Increase – HuffPost

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — With the United States grappling with the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world, Florida hit a grim milestone Sunday, shattering the national record for a state’s largest single-day increase in positive cases. Deaths from the virus have also been rising in the U.S., especially in the South and West, though still well below the heights hit in April, according to a recent Associated Press analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. “I really do think we could control this, and it’s the human element that is so critical. It should be an effort of our country. We should be pulling together when we’re in a crisis, and we’re definitely not doing it,” said University of Florida epidemiologist Dr. Cindy Prins. Adm. Brett Giroir, a member of the White Hous...

Dr. Scott Miscovich of Premier Medical Group Hawaii said his team was brought in to Pearl City Nursing Home to test about 100 residents and 200 workers on Friday and Saturday. Four residents and two staff members tested positive for COVID-19. He said a staff member tested positive for the coronavirus late Thursday, who believed to have contracted it through a family member. According to Dr Miscovich, the employee hadn't been at work for a while but the administration acted quickly. "They brought all hands on deck," Dr. Miscovich said. "We had numerous meetings. They cooperated with all the testing events that we put up, they immediately followed through all the protocols that we were recommending when it came to setting up a true isolation zone, which I helped them design, moving those re...

Coronavirus live news: WHO reports record global cases as South Africa reinstates alcohol ban – The Guardian

The place that seemed like the last in the world capable of containing the virus – Dharavi slum in Mumbai – has been hailed as a success story by the WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, writes Amrit Dhillon in New Delhi. Speaking recently about countries that had done well in the pandemic, Dr Ghebreyesus included Dharavi as an example of how, even where the outbreak was intense, it could be brought under control. “Even in Dharavi, a densely packed area in Mumbai, a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus,” he said. The largest slum in Asia at one point looked as though it might become a charnel house. A million peop...

They brought him the money in a silver metal briefcase and placed it on a picnic table at Miramar Reservoir. Up came the lid: $100,000 in paper-strapped stacks of $50 bills. All those greenbacks beside all that blue water — no wonder Lenin Gutierrez’s eyes got big. “I [have] never seen anything like this except in the movies,” he said. Three weeks ago, the 24-year-old college student was working at a Starbucks in Clairemont when a customer came in without wearing a face mask. He pointed out the coronavirus rules, she left, and then criticized him on Facebook for refusing to serve her. That caught the eye of Matt Cowan, an Irvine marketing and brand strategist, who thinks masks are a good idea and internet bullying a bad one. So he started a “Tips for Lenin for Standing Up to a San Dieg...

Back to school: What doctors say about children and COVID-19 – NBC News

President Donald Trump is pressing state and local officials to reopen schools this fall, despite coronavirus infections surging nationwide. While experts say there are significant social benefits to resuming in-person classes, they caution that schools will need to balance those against potential risks to provide a safe learning environment for students — as well as teachers and administrators. Evidence suggests that children are not as susceptible as adults to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Even among those who have been infected, it's relatively rare for children to develop serious complications or require hospitalization. But this doesn't mean classrooms can be exempt from social distancing and other safety precautions, particularly if schools intend to welcome kid...
