Fourth of July house party in Washtenaw Co. tied to 43 coronavirus cases – Detroit Free Press

More than 40 coronavirus cases in Saline are linked to a Fourth of July party.  The Washtenaw County Health Department has identified 43 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 66 exposed contacts from a house party July 2-3 in the Saline area, according to a news release. The exposed contacts do not count immediate family members from the same household.  Most of the confirmed cases are in people ages 15-25, according to the health department.  The health department is asking anyone who attended the gathering or knows they were exposed to self-quarantine for 14 days and monitor themselves for symptoms.  An investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, according to the health department. Moderna Stock Jumps as Analyst Expects the FDA to Approve Its Covid-19 Vaccine – Barrons

Text size Maddie Meyer/Getty Images Shares of Moderna are up 239% so far this year, and the biotech company, which has no approved drugs, has a market capitalization of more than $24 billion. But in a note out Monday morning, Jefferies analyst Michael Yee writes that the stock can still climb higher. The biggest story for Moderna (ticker: MRNA) is the company’s Covid-19 vaccine, which turned what was once a controversial if promising biotech into a household name. The company is on the brink of beginning Phase 3 trials of the vaccine. Yee thinks that it could soon be a blockbuster for the company. “We b...

Is the coronavirus airborne? The latest guidance from the WHO, explained. – Vox.com

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the World Health Organization has stressed that, primarily, Covid-19 spreads through very close personal contact. The virus-laden droplets exhaled from a sick person’s mouth and nose, the thinking goes, are heavy, and fall to the ground before they can get much farther than 6 feet. But as the pandemic has unfolded, contact tracing studies have shown this isn’t always the case. In China, an air conditioner pushed virus-laden air across three tables, infecting people seated at each one. Researchers reviewed video from the restaurant and saw many of these patrons were more than 6 feet apart from one another, suggesting that the virus traveled through the air. In Washington state, one person at a choir practice infected 52 of the other participan...

Coronavirus: New UK study shows antibodies fade after three weeks – Business Insider – Business Insider

Coronavirus immunity starts to fade away just weeks after people show symptoms, according to a new study by UK scientists. King's College London research found that the presence of antibodies peaked three weeks after symptoms appeared, before fading away. In some cases, the antibodies were undetectable three months afterwards. It followed a Spanish study last week which also found antibody protection rapidly declining in many patients. One of the UK study's authors said it put "another nail in the coffin of the dangerous concept of herd immunity." Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Immunity to the coronavirus may disappear within months for many patients, according to a major new UK study which found that antibodies peaked three weeks after sym...

California rolls back reopenings as coronavirus surges – Los Angeles Times

With the coronavirus death toll in California jumping past 7,000 and cases continuing to surge, more parts of the state are rolling back reopening plans as they try desperately to slow outbreaks and prevent more hospitals from hitting capacity. California has seen coronavirus cases and hospitalizations skyrocket in the last month as the economy has reopened and residents have gone back to summer socializing. Although the state clamped down by shutting bars and banning indoor dining in many areas, officials described the conditions as critical. The rate at which COVID-19 tests are coming back positive in California over the previous seven days hit 8.3% on Sunday. That’s the highest percentage since April — a continuing sign that the coronavirus is spreading throughout the state, according ...

Heres how scientists know the coronavirus came from bats and wasnt made in a lab – The Conversation UK

One of the conspiracy theories that have plagued attempts to keep people informed during the pandemic is the idea that the coronavirus was created in a laboratory. But the vast majority of scientists who have studied the virus agree that it evolved naturally and crossed into humans from an animal species, most likely a bat. How exactly do we know that this virus, SARS-CoV-2, has a “zoonotic” animal origin and not an artificial one? The answers lie in the genetic material and evolutionary history of the virus, and understanding the ecology of the bats in question. An estimated 60% of known infectious diseases and 75% of all new, emerging, or re-emerging diseases in humans have animal origins. SARS-CoV-2 is the newest of seven coronaviruses found in humans, all of which came fro...

Diets high in fruits, vegetables may help reduce Type 2 diabetes by 50 percent, study say – The Washington Post

A diet high in fruits and vegetables may help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50 percent, a large new study suggests. The study, which spanned about 10 years and included more than 22,000 people, looked at the link between participants’ chance of developing Type 2 diabetes and their blood levels of vitamin C and carotenoids (pigments found in colorful vegetables, such as carrots and tomatoes), considered reliable indicators of fruit and vegetable consumption. The researchers calculated that every 66 gram (2.3 ounce) increase in fruit and vegetable consumption could lower risk by 25 percent. Another study, also just published, found that whole-grain foods — such as oatmeal, cold breakfast cereal, brown rice and dark bread, as well as foods with added bran or wheat germ — se...
