A Toxic Fungus Could Be Contributing to Some Peoples Irritable Bowel Disease – ScienceAlert

Some strains of yeast in the human gut can produce toxins that could contribute to irritable bowel disease (IBD), according to new research. These "high-damaging" Candida albicans yeast strains aren't usually a problem when they are kept in balance, but in the guts of those with IBD, the fungi appear to proliferate, triggering inflammation.   The research was focused on a form of IBD known as ulcerative colitis (UC), which is marked by inflammation and frequently ulceration of the lining in the large intestine. In this part of the gut, fungi are also highly abundant and rich in diversity. When scientists compared the colons of 40 UC patients against 38 controls who didn't have IBD, they found C. albicans strains were over-represented in the guts of those with UC. The more severe the ...

“Vicious Cycle” Discovered Between Excessive Daytime Napping and Alzheimer’s Dementia – SciTechDaily

In a study of older adults, longer, more frequent daytime napping in a specific year predicted worse cognitive performance in the following year, and vice versa. Daytime napping is common among older adults. The longitudinal relationship between daytime napping and cognitive aging, however, is unknown. A new cohort study by investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital found a bidirectional link between the two: excessive daytime napping predicted an increased future risk of Alzheimer’s dementia, and a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s dementia sped up the increase in daytime napping during aging. The team’s results are published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Daytime sleep behaviors of older adults are oftentimes ignored, and a consensus ...

The single most effective set of muscles you can work to extend your life is in your hands. Why it matters: This shocked us, too. But many health and fitness experts argue that since falling is the leading cause of injury-related death once we cross 65 years old, we should start strengthening our hands now. Stunning stat: The threat is getting worse, Death by falling increased 30% from 2009 to 2018, according to CDC data. Stronger hands grip tighter to prevent falls — and brace stronger when you tumble. Grip strength is especially important for those older adults who use canes, walkers or handrails or need assistance getting out of chairs, says David Bellar, a kinesiologist at UNC Charlotte. It's not just bracing yourself. Scientists have linked stronger hands to healthier hearts. On...
