The origins of the iconic rapper Notorious B.I.G. are told in the trailer for Netflix‘s new documentary Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell.
The documentary is comprised of rarely seen footage filmed by Biggie’s best friend, Damion “D-Roc” Butler, including new interviews with his family and friends.
The late rapper, born Christopher Wallace, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in March 1997, at just 24 years of age.

The trailer begins with candid shots of the rapper, as he explains, ‘That’s all it was. That’s all it was. Was a dream.’
Rare footage taken in 1995 shows Biggie shaving with an electric razor, with Butler explaining, ‘My boy get three hairs, he get nervous.’
Biggie explains that he can’t be ‘looking like I’m 21. Gotta keep that 18 feel’ as he smiles for the camera in a hotel room.

Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, reveals her son, ‘was a very smart kid,’ adding that he started writing as early as elementary school.
Another unidentified man says he was trying to ‘groom Chris to be a jazz artist because he was so talented.’

His mother said that he told her he wasn’t working, and she believed him, as he started dealing drugs.
Diddy said that he told Biggie that if he wanted to rap, he had to ‘commit’ to it, adding, ‘you can’t do both,’ meaning he can’t still sell drugs and start a rap career.

The documentary will drop on Netflix March 1, just months ahead of what would have been his 50th birthday in May.
It was announced last month that Notorious B.I.G. will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
