[SPOILER ALERT: Spoilers ahead for Big Brother 22.]
After the Big Brother 22 Week 5 Power of Veto competition, Tyler Crispen told Bayleigh Dayton and Da’Vonne Rogers he wanted to sacrifice his game for “the movement.” When it fell through, many fans accused the BB20 runner-up of “performative activism” and believed he only brought up “the cause” to save face outside the house.
Tyler Crispen said he wanted to leave ‘Big Brother 22’
A couple of weeks ago, Tyler Crispen told Ian Terry that he initially rejected the invitation to return for All-Stars a few times. However, his girlfriend and BB20 star Angela Rummans called a production member unbeknownst to him and said he would come back.
A week later, Tyler admitted he wasn’t enjoying himself this season in a conversation with David Alexander. According to the BB20 runner-up, he feels “too much pressure” to live up to his previous performance and doesn’t like that others admire him for his ability to manipulate or lie well.
Tyler also pointed out that he no longer enjoys the “premise” of the show and hates “crushing people’s dreams” to benefit himself. Even though the BB20 runner-up recognized that “everyone signs up for it,” he admitted, “it gets to you more than you think it does.”
After Bayleigh Dayton and Da’Vonne Rogers’ nomination, Tyler told Cody that he would self-evict if “s**t starts happening.”

The Head of Household Christmas Abbott also won the Power of Veto and initially planned on keeping nominations the same. However, Tyler approached Bayleigh and Da’Vonne after the competition and admitted he started self-sabotaging.
He also revealed he wanted to “stand for something bigger than himself” and recognized that the ladies were there for a “bigger cause.”
Therefore, the BB20 runner-up offered to speak with Christmas about using the POV on one of the friends and backdooring him to go home.

Bayleigh and Da’Vonne became emotional while thanking Tyler and called his sacrifice “the most courageous thing” they’ve seen a houseguest do on the show.
The BB20 runner-up later talked to Christmas, but the conversation didn’t air on the Live Feeds. He also allegedly spoke to production members who convinced him against it.
However, the HOH decided against it because she’s aligned with Tyler and believed it isn’t her responsibility to send him home or do anyone’s “dirty work.”
Fans accuse Tyler Crispen of ‘performative activism’
Even though some fans sided with Tyler and blamed Christmas for not using the POV, others accused the BB20 runner-up of “performative activism” because they feel he only claimed to be an ally for the viewers watching.
Big Brother pundit Aman Adwin explained that Tyler knew Christmas had no intention of using the POV but strung Bayleigh along. The pundit believes that Tyler listed “the [Black Lives Matter] movement” in his reasons for wanting to leave.
Therefore, not telling Bayleigh that Christmas wouldn’t use the POV “cheapens the gravity of the movement” important to the allies. Additionally, he called Tyler’s behavior “performative activism” and thinks it led to the ladies’ embarrassment when Christmas didn’t use the POV as they anticipated.

Several viewers believe Tyler wanted to leave because he misses his girlfriend, not because he cares about the “the movement.” Additionally, they feel he used BLM to manipulate the ladies.
His girlfriend and BB20 star Angela Rummans defended Tyler in a note, promising “he would never intentionally, or unintentionally, mean to hurt or cause disrespect to another person.”
She also insisted he would have “gladly” left to “stand up for what he believes in,” but “other factors” prevented him from leaving. Big Brother 22: All-Stars airs Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
