Decades of research on an HIV vaccine boosts the bid for one against coronavirus – The Washington Post

“Yet another terrible disease is about to yield to patience, persistence and outright genius,” Heckler said. Those decades of research into HIV have taught scientists an enormous amount about the immune system, honed vaccine technologies now being repurposed against the coronavirus and created a worldwide infrastructure of clinical trial networks that can be pivoted from HIV to the pathogen that causes the disease covid-19. Laboratories, testing sites and recruitment networks that were rushed into action against the coronavirus exist because of the enormous amount of money spent on HIV. Equipment and expertise is in place. Infection control has been upgraded. Regulators are engaged. “The investment in HIV research has made the response to covid-19 possible,” said Dan H. Barouch, direc...

Squirrel tests positive for bubonic plague in Colorado | TheHill – The Hill

A squirrel found in a Colorado town tested positive for bubonic plague, county health officials said.  Jefferson County health officials said in a statement Sunday that a squirrel found in the town of Morrison, which is just west of Denver, tested positive for the bubonic plague on Saturday.  Health officials warned that the bubonic plague can be contracted by humans and household animals if “proper precautions” are not taken.  The county is recommending the public eliminate all sources of food, shelter and access for wild animals around their homes. The public is also urged not feed wild animals, maintain litter- and trash-free yards to reduce wild animal habitats and avoid contact with sick or dead wild animals and rodents.  Humans may be infected with the plague through bi...

Baby girl born in Texas with coronavirus strongest evidence yet it can be caught in the womb – Daily Mail

A baby born with the coronavirus has provided the 'strongest evidence yet' that the infection can be caught in the womb, doctors claim. The unnamed girl, from Texas, was wheeled into intensive care as soon as she was born because her mother had been diagnosed with Covid-19. She tested positive for the coronavirus the day after birth, having suffered breathing problems and a fever — two tell-tale signs of the disease.   When scientists analysed her placenta, they found inflammation and traces of the coronavirus. This proves that the baby caught the virus while in the womb rather than after she had been born, the team claimed. Last week Italian experts also found 'strong evidence' of transmission in the womb because the virus was discovered in umbilical cord blood and the placenta. Until no...

Coronavirus updates: Doctor compares Miami to Wuhan as epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic – ABC News

The novel coronavirus pandemic has now killed more than 573,000 people worldwide. Over 13 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some governments are hiding or downplaying the scope of their nations' outbreaks. The United States has become the worst-affected country, with more than 3.3 million diagnosed cases and at least 135,615 deaths.
