A Connecticut man is recovering at home after suffering a case of the rare Powassan virus, state officials reports. The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed last week that a man between 50 and 59 years old fell ill in March, and suffered a severe illness that affected his central nervous system and required hospitalization. It is the second high profile case of the rare, tick-borne, virus in the region, with Maine reporting a death from the Powassan virus just three weeks ago. The highly deadly virus attacks a person's brain and nervous system, and has no vaccine or known effective treatments or cures. Connecticut officials report that a man in his 50s in the state suffered from a rare case of the Powassan virus in March. They confirmed that he was ...

Bucatini all’Amatriciana Recipe

A Classic Roman Dish - Bucatini all'Amatriciana Like many of you, Meg and I watched the Stanley Tucci special on CNN called Searching for Italy. In the Rome episode, he has lunch at Armando Al Pantheon to enjoy their famous rigatoni all'amatriciana, one of Rome's famous pastas. I made it a little different and call it bucatini all'Amatriciana. Of course I had to run out and buy the ingredients so we could make it at home. Not a lot of ingredients and very simple to prepare and absolutely delicious. Let's look at some of the ingredients. Bucatini Bucatini is a pasta that looks a lot like spaghetti but it is thicker and has a whole running down through the strand. My kids like to say it looks like a straw made out of pasta.  If you lived in Naples, Italy, you would call...

Avatar: The Way of Water Trailer: Dive Back Into Pandora – TheWrap

The first trailer for “Avatar: The Way of Water” hit the web Monday after first debuting at CinemaCon and then ahead of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” — but if you still haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat. The “Avatar” sequel is directed by James Cameron, based on his 2009 blockbuster hit, and he now takes us underwater with some stunning outerworld cinematography. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure. “I know one thing: wherever we go, this family is our fortress,” Sam Worthingt...

Chef Mario Batali Goes on Trial in Boston for Sexual Misconduct – The New York Times

Mario Batali, once considered the best-known celebrity chef in the United States, went on trial Monday in Boston on charges of indecent battery and assault connected to what began as a selfie session in a Boston bar in 2017. Several prominent chefs and restaurateurs have been accused of sexual harassment and abuse since the #MeToo movement spread into the world of restaurants and hospitality in the fall of 2017, but Mr. Batali is the only one who has faced criminal charges. If convicted, he could face up to two and a half years in the Suffolk County House of Correction and be required to register as a sex offender. Jury selection had been scheduled to begin on Monday, but in the morning Mr. Batali told Judge James Stanton that he would waive his right to a jury trial and instead leave th...

2022 Tony Awards Nominations: Live Updates and News – The New York Times

David Threlfall’s titanic performance, Jesse Green wrote in his review of Martin McDonagh’s “Hangmen,” “offers the most terrifying incarnation yet of the author’s acid misanthropy.”Credit...Sara Krulwich/The New York Times Forty years ago, the English actor David Threlfall was a young actor making his Broadway debut when he was nominated for his first Tony Award for “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.” Threlfall, now a 68-year-old veteran stage and screen actor, received his second nomination on Monday, for his role as an executioner-turned-pub-owner in Martin McDonagh’s acclaimed dark comedy “Hangmen.” “It sounds long, doesn’t it, when you put it that way?” Threlfall groaned, speaking in an interview after the nominations were announced on Monday. In “Hangmen” — which re...

Does Sex Position Matter When Youre Trying to Get Pregnant? – Lifehacker

Photo: comzeal images (Shutterstock) If you and your partner ready to start a family, you might be wondering what you can do to increase your chances of getting pregnant sooner rather than later. From taking care of your own health to the timing (and position) of sex, here’s what you need to know as you start trying to conceive. Are certain sex positions better for getting pregnant? The short answer is: no. “There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that one sex position over the other increases the chances of conception,” says Dr. Jill McDevitt, resident sexologist at CalExotics and author of Sex Positions for Every Body. “Pregnancy is possible in any sex position, and there’s no empirical evidence that the position changes the probability one way or the other.” She n...

The Common Places BA.2 And Other Omicron Subvariants Are Spreading – HuffPost

Earlier in the pandemic, contact tracing data showed us where COVID-19 was predominantly spreading. Unfortunately, because our contact tracing efforts have slowed down, we don’t have as clear of a picture regarding where people are mostly likely to contract omicron and its subvariants. What we do know is that, while the virus has evolved to be much more transmissible than previous variants, the way COVID-19 spreads hasn’t changed. “Nothing has changed in terms of how any individual right now, regardless of their day-to-day activity, can pick this virus up,” Mark Cameron, infectious disease researcher at Case Western Reserve University, told HuffPost. Because of that, we can assume there are some hot spots for BA.2 and other omicron subvariants compared to others. Here are common places...
