South Carolina dog put down after testing positive for coronavirus: report – Fox News

A dog in South Carolina had to be euthanized after it tested positive for the coronavirus, according to Clemson University on Thursday. The canine was the first animal in South Carolina to be infected with COVID-19, said Dr. Boyd Parr, state veterinarian and director of Clemson Livestock Poultry Health (LPH). Parr said a private veterinarian decided to test the 8-9-year-old shepherd mix for the virus after one of its owners was confirmed to have COVID-19. Veterinary findings determined the dog had a chronic health condition, which was the reason the animal was put down, he added. TEXAS DOG FIRST ANIMAL IN STATE CONFIRMED TO HAVE COVID-19 “Based on current knowledge, there continues to be no evidence that pets play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people,” Parr said. “It ...

Australian researchers invent 20-minute coronavirus blood test – Yahoo News

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Researchers in Australia have devised a test that can determine novel coronavirus infection in about 20 minutes using blood samples in what they say is a world-first breakthrough. The researchers at Monash University said their test can determine if someone is currently infected and if they have been infected in the past. "Short-term applications include rapid case identification and contact tracing to limit viral spread, while population screening to determine the extent of viral infection across communities is a longer-term need," the researchers said in a paper published in the journal ACS Sensors on Friday. The research team was led by BioPRIA and Monash University’s Chemical Engineering Department, including researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Converge...

Colorado reports 1st human plague case since 2015, officials say theres no increased risk to public – The Denver Channel

A southwest Colorado resident was infected with plague after exposure to sick squirrels earlier this summer, the first confirmed case of the disease in humans in the state since 2015. But health officials emphasized that the public only needs to take normal precautions. Plague, a bacterial disease that’s typically carried by fleas but also can spread through respiratory droplets, has been in Colorado since the 1940s, said Dr. Jennifer House, state public health veterinarian for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Infected wild animals have been found in Jefferson, Adams and Broomfield counties this year, though the disease can circulate in rodent communities around the state. “While we see most plague activity during the summer, the disease can be found in rodents ye...

3 reasons why Tennessee is seeing lower COVID-19 death rates than other states – WKRN News 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As state health officials release daily COVID-19 numbers, data shows how Tennessee stacks up to other states in the rise of cases and deaths. “Certainly while we are watching those numbers each day, we know that each of those numbers is a real person,” said Dr. Melinda Buntin, chair of the Department of Health Policy at Vanderbilt School of Medicine. As of Thursday, Tennessee had 2,749 new cases and 13 new deaths in a 24-hour period. So far, 796 people have died because of coronavirus in the state of Tennessee. That death toll is a fraction of the number other states are experiencing. For instance, Georgia has seen more than 3,104. “In Georgia, they have had about 29 deaths per hundred thousand Georgians. Whereas in Tennessee, we’ve on...

Early COVID-19 Vaccine Results Look Really Encouraging, Says NIH Boss Dr. Francis Collins – MSN Money

It isn’t often that one hears the word “pandemic” and “inspired” in the same sentence. But the director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, says that, for all the suffering and grief that COVID-19 has wrought around the world, he has at least witnessed an unprecedented level of cooperation between private industry and the alphabet soup of government agencies who are urgently seeking a vaccine for the devastating virus. “We’ve never had that before. In this case, I guess the global pandemic has inspired us to do things that maybe we should have done before,” said Collins. “I hope we don’t let that crumble when we get through this.” Collins has had a first-hand view of how this gargantuan coalition came togeth...
