Netflix co-founder brushes off NBCs new Peacock streaming competitor – Yahoo Finance

Disney (DIS) entering the steaming wars last year didn’t strike panic in the heart of Netflix’s co-founder, and now as NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service officially launches, it’s déjà vu all over again for the man who first led the streaming leader. Even as Peacock pushes the number of major players in the streaming space well past 10, Netflix’s first CEO Marc Randolph told Yahoo Finance that Netflix (NFLX) will remain unshaken on its path to continue outpacing the competition. Interestingly, Peacock launched this week with a slightly different option for customers by offering a free, ad-supported tier as well as a paid subscription option. Despite that, Randolph says it won’t be enough to entice Netflix to do the same, nor will it be enough to shake things up. “If they had been f...

Ellen DeGeneres Show execs held low morale meeting after bodyguard exposed her cold behavior – Fox News

Executive producers of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" reportedly had no choice but to address allegations of its toxic workplace environment following Fox News' published interview with a bodyguard who documented his unsavory experience with the host. One employee still working for the production company behind DeGeneres' talk show claimed to Buzzfeed News that Thomas Majercak's exclusive interview with Fox News left execs scrambling to combat the accusations head-on after weeks of remaining silent. "A current employee told BuzzFeed News that on May 1, the same day the story about the former bodyguard was published, executive producers took the rare move of holding an all-staff meeting over Zoom to address the negative stories and low morale," the report said. White House team recommends tighter COVID-19 restrictions for Tennessee, red zones like Nashville – Tennessean

The White House coronavirus task force is recommending Tennessee and local "red zones" like Nashville, where virus cases are surging, to implement stricter restrictions such as mask mandates and closing businesses.  Federal recommendations for 18 states were originally published Tuesday by the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit newsroom based in Washington, D.C.  In the report, federal officials recommend that Tennessee require face masks in public where cases are on the rise. It also recommended that it close bars and gyms in hot spot counties and limit indoor dining at restaurants to 25% capacity.  Other recommendations include:  Instituting routine weekly testing of all workers in assisted living and long-term care facilities and requiring visitors to wear masks and socially d...

Top HHS official says most of the coronavirus transmission is from asymptomatic people – CNBC

Most transmission of the coronavirus is coming from people who are asymptomatic and never develop any signs of the virus, a top official from the Department of Health and Human Services said Friday.  "Just feeling like you want to go get a test is really not the best strategy, but we know that most of the spread are from asymptomatic people, particularly young adults, so you have to cast a wide net and I think we're able to do that," Adm. Brett Giroir, assistant secretary for health at HHS, said in an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box." An asymptomatic person is someone with Covid-19 who doesn't have indications of the virus and never develops them. Scientists have found that people who don't have symptoms can spread the virus. That includes asymptomatic people as well as peo...

A Detailed Map of Who Is Wearing Masks in the U.S. – The New York Times

In some American neighborhoods, it’s hard to spot even one person outside without a face covering. In others, your odds of seeing many maskless people are quite high. Public health officials believe that face coverings can substantially slow transmission of the coronavirus, which is spreading rapidly in many states. But face coverings work best if they are adopted widely, and that is not the case everywhere. The accompanying map shows the odds of whether, if you encountered five people in a given area, all of them would be wearing masks. Our data comes from a large number of interviews conducted by the global data and survey firm Dynata at the request of The New York Times. The firm asked a question about mask use to obtain 250,000 survey responses b...

A day in the life of a COVID-19 contact tracer – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

Contact tracing is considered a critical tool in the fight to contain coronavirus, but what is it like to do the work? While medical staff are working to save lives from COVID-19, it’s the contact tracers who can actually stop the spread. READ: ‘Answer the phone’: Michigan health officials contacting residents about COVID-19 contact Local 4 spoke with Dayna Benoit, a contact tracer with the Washtenaw County Health Department, to share what it’s like to do the job that so many are counting on. “The majority of my day is on the phone,” Benoit said. Benoit worked as a community health analyst until March, when she was reassigned to be a contact tracer. She thought it would last only a few weeks. “As the situation unraveled, clearly that was not the case,” Benoit said. “Here we are, many mon...

Billy Joel Saw a Sidewalk Piano, So Of Course He Played It – Billboard

Piano men gotta piano, right? In a world gone mad, there are a few things you can count on, and Billy Joel tickling the ivories is definitely one of them. In a viral video shot last month, Joel, 71, is seen stopping to play a tune on a sidewalk keyboard in Huntington, Long Island, zipping of an impromptu version of Shelton Brooks' 1917 ragtime roll "Darktown Strutters' Ball." Wearing a black jacket and pants and sporting a motorcycle helmet, Joel opines, "Not bad, the action is good... Just needs tuning, and the finish is beat. It's a perfectly good piano." Tinkling the high end of the instrument the singer adds, "It's a shame to throw it out," before suggesting someone should donate it to St. Vincent de Paul. He also check out the pedals and the finish on the keys and again praise...
