Coronavirus relatives may pose threat to humans: study | TheHill – The Hill

The coronavirus circulating across the globe may have close relatives that have not yet been discovered, a hint that the current pandemic will not be the last one to threaten humans. New research published Tuesday in the journal Nature Microbiology finds the current strain, known in the scientific literature as SARS-CoV-2, diverged genetically from other known viruses that circulated in bats between 40 and 70 years ago. Because coronaviruses recombine and evolve into new species frequently, it is all but certain that other strains have evolved within bat populations in China during those intervening years. That means other viruses more closely related to SARS-CoV-2 than its current closest known relative may pose the potential for future outbreaks. “From this ancestor in the 1960s...

Regal will open theaters on Aug. 21 — but won’t require masks during movies – Polygon

COVID-19 continues to surge across the country, but movie theaters are making plans to open doors next month. Regal announced that it would be reopening locations starting Aug. 21. The company posted their new safety guidelines on its website. Notably, while masks will be required in lobby, hallways, and restroom locations, patrons are able to remove them while eating or drinking in the auditorium — which is to say at any point while watching a movie, or for the entire movie if they wish. Employees, however, are required to wear masks and undergo daily health screenings. The theaters will shift to contactless payment only and serve limited menu items, with self-serve stations closed. Every other cash register will be empty. Theaters will all have dispensable hand sanitizer and gree...

The Great British Baking Show Has Been Secretly Filming During Quarantine, Heres How – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

It looks like fans of The Great British Baking Show are getting a season in 2020 after all. When the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began spreading across the globe, it halted film and television productions. As the virus has continued to rage on with no vaccine available, companies had to come up with ways to make sets safe for its casts and crews. Since The Great British Baking Show is shot in a confined white tent full of ovens, shared space, and cooking supplies it presented an even tougher challenge for the BBC and Love Productions. However, it looks like the companies put on their thinking hats and judges Paul Hollywood, Prue Lieth, as well as hosts Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig are back with a slew of new contestants and everyone is ready to bake. RE...

Ellen DeGeneres Show workplace under investigation by WarnerMedia – NBC News

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” is the subject of an internal probe by Warner Media after reports of a toxic work environment. The investigation was first reported by Variety, which cited a memo to staff from show producer Telepictures and distributor Warner Bros. Television that says they have engaged WarnerMedia’s employee relations group and a third party firm to interview current and former employees about their experiences working for the show. NBC News has not seen the memo, but a source close to the production confirmed the investigation, saying it started last week and that "there are conversations going on" with past and present employees. The source also said that DeGeneres is not part of the review: “It is not about her at all." Variety reported in April that some crew on the show...

New York Gov. Cuomo calls Hamptons concert a gross violation of public health as state launches probe – CNBC

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday called for an investigation into a charity concert that drew a packed crowd of partiers in the tony beach village of Southampton this past weekend. "It wasn't just a gross violation of public health rules. It was a gross violation of common sense," Cuomo said during a press conference call. "We're taking that very seriously." Cuomo said the town of Southampton could face penalties for violating public safety measures. He said the village leadership will be involved in the inquiry by the New York State Department of Health.  "This is a law. There are civil penalties. There are criminal penalties," he said. "The town of Southampton is going to have a problem. I don't know how they approved that permit." Cuomo urged local governments t...

PLANTATION, Fla. – A South Florida gym owner was released from jail early Tuesday morning, hours after he was arrested for allowing his gym members to choose whether or not they want to wear a face mask during workouts. “Right now, I’m trusting that everything’s happening for a reason,” Michael Carnevale said. “I was there for maybe six or seven hours. My wife posted bond for me.” Police officers showed up to Carnevale’s business, Fitness 1440 on West Broward Boulevard in Plantation, on Monday after someone reported that the 24-hour gym was violating Broward County’s emergency order requiring masks. Carnevale was ordered to shut it down, but he refused. He spoke to Local 10 News after he was first given a notice to appear in court and before officers took him into custody and locked his...

Even with vaccine, We will be dealing with this forever: Virus experts Frieden, Osterholm – CNBC

Two of the country's top infectious disease experts presented a sobering look at the battle still to come against Covid-19. Their message, conveyed during a recent CNBC event, was encapsulated in related views on how much of a difference a coronavirus vaccine can make and what reaching herd immunity in the U.S. population will mean for life across the nation.  "Even with a vaccine, there is no going back to normal anytime soon," said Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaking at a CNBC Workforce Executive Council virtual event to human resources executives on July 23 about a safe return to the workplace. "Prepare for at least eight to 12 months of this situation," said Frieden, who now runs the Resolve to Save Lives disease preven...
