Dogs can sniff out COVID-19 with 94 percent accuracy, study says – New York Post

Man’s best friend could soon be man’s best chance at ever setting foot in a stadium again. Dogs can sniff out the coronavirus with a striking 94 percent accuracy rate — raising the possibility of instant tests at sporting events and airports, according to a new study. Canine handlers trained eight dogs from Germany’s Armed Forces to discern human saliva infected with COVID-19 from healthy saliva, according to the study, which was lead by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover and the Hanover Medical School. Researchers then set up samples from 1,000 people at random, ordered the dogs to pinpoint the infected ones — and found the animals were accurate 94 percent of the time, according to the study. The pooches were able to make the potentially life-saving distinction...

Taller people face higher risk of catching COVID-19, survey says – Fox News

People over six feet tall are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with the coronavirus, the results of a new survey reveal. The global team of researchers, including experts from the University of Manchester and Open University, surveyed 2,000 people in the country, as well as the US, to determine whether their personal attributes, work and living practices might play a role in transmission, The Telegraph reported. The results found that taller people are at a higher risk, which researchers say suggests that the contagion is spreading through the air — because height would not be a factor if the virus was only contractible through droplets, according to the report. “The results of this survey in terms of associations between height and diagnosis suggest downward drople...

This years Emmy nominees are pretty diverse, but not everyone is happy – CNN

In the acting categories, 33% of the nominees are Black, compared with 14% the five years prior, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times. Their analysis found that performers of color made up 37% of the total of nominations overall, which is 6% more than in any of the past five years. Reginald Hudlin, well known for having directed classic African-American films "Boomerang" and "House Party," will produce the Emmys -- the show's first Black producer. But there has been some backlash over the nominations falling short on representation. Some on social media complained that while Billy Porter, who is Black, was nominated for lead actor in a drama series for "Pose," none of the central trans actors on the show received a nod. The Ryan Murphy series has been hailed for shining a...

Why do some coronavirus patients lose sense of smell? Harvard researchers have an answer – Fox News

Temporary loss of smell, or anosmia, is a common symptom of COVID-19, and one study recently determined the cell types in the upper nasal cavity most vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The research team led by neuroscientists at Harvard Medical School (HMS) found that non-neuronal cell types may be responsible for loss of smell in coronavirus patients. Their findings were recently published in Science Advances. “Our findings indicate that the novel coronavirus changes the sense of smell in patients not by directly infecting neurons but by affecting the function of supporting cells,” said Sandeep Robert Datta, senior study author and associate professor of neurobiology in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS, in a university news release.
