COVID-19 patient says she didnt recognize body after undergoing a double lung transplant – Daily Mail

A Chicago woman who last month became the country's first COVID-19 patient to undergo a double lung transplant said she woke up days later, unaware about the surgery and unable to 'recognize my body.'  Mayra Ramirez, 28, spoke to the media on Thursday alongside Brian Kuhns, 62, of Lake Zurich, Illinois, who followed her as the second U.S. coronavirus patient to undergo the procedure. Ramirez went into surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago on June 5 and didn't wake up until weeks later.  'I looked at myself and couldn't recognize my body,' she told reporters. 'I didn't have the cognitive ability to process what was going on. All I knew was that I wanted water.'  Scroll down for video  Mayra Ramirez, a COVID-19 survivor due to a double-lung transplant, spoke ...

Taylor Swift pledges donation to Black business owner after shes accused of ripping off design for “Folklore” merchandise – CBS News

As the music on Taylor Swift's latest album, "Folklore," continues to receive praise on social media, the merchandise for her latest release has come under fire. Amira Rasool, the founder of Black-owned retailer The Folklore, has accused Swift of ripping off the company's logo for album merchandise — and now, Swift's team is taking action.  Rasool posted about the similar logos on her Instagram page last week. Her company is "an online concept store delivering Africa & the diaspora's top contemporary designer brands," according to its Instagram.  Since then, Swift's merchandise appears to have dropped "the" from its Folklore branding. On Thursday, Swift tweeted at Rasool, saying that she will make a contribution to Rasool's company and donate to the soon-to-launch Black in Fas...

Beyonces Black Is King Visual Album Has Arrived – Billboard

Beyonce's new visual album, Black Is King, arrived on Friday (July 31). Bey initially announced the news with a surprise one-minute trailer for the visual album -- which has also been described as a film -- on her website in June, giving fans a first look at the Lion King-inspired release. Written, directed and executive produced by Beyonce, Black Is King premiered globally via Disney+ about a year after the theatrical release of the Lion King remake, which Beyonce voiced Nala in. Black Is King is based on the music from Bey's 2019 soundtrack for the animated film, The Lion King: The Gift. Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Jay-Z and Blue Ivy Carter all made appearances on the set. A release promised that the visual album will highlight "the voyages of Black famil...

2 COVID-19 deaths being investigated at Commerce food facility that was closed along with 2 others for not reporting virus outbreaks: Health officer – KTLA Los Angeles

L.A. County’s health department is investigating reports of two COVID-19 deaths at a Commerce food processing facility, one of three in the county that have been allowed to reopen after being closed earlier this week for failing to report coronavirus outbreaks, officials said Thursday. The deaths were reported at Mission Foods Corp., which has had 49 employees test positive for the virus, L.A. County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said in a Thursday briefing. The health department said one of the people who died was an L.A. County resident, and the other lived outside the department’s jurisdiction. The head of maintenance at the facility, 67 year-old Jose Roberto Alvarez, died of COVID-19 last week and it is believed he contracted the coronavirus at his Commerce wor...

Coronavirus aerosol transmission might be even worse than we think – BGR

Coronavirus aerosol spread is a real risk, the World Health Organization said a few weeks ago after more than 200 researchers urged the WHO to acknowledge the issue. But the organization maintains that droplet transmission is the primary way COVID-19 spreads. A new study looked at how COVID-19 moved inside the closed environment of the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Japan in early February, finding that aerosol transmission may be a worse phenomenon than we thought. The research follows other studies that proved virus from aerosols can infect cells, and that showed taller people are twice more likely to be infected. The Diamond Princess cruise ship gained worldwide notoriety in early February when Japanese authorities quarantined the boat in Port of Y...

At least 2 people infected with West Nile virus in in L.A. County, officials say – KTLA Los Angeles

The first two cases of people infected with West Nile virus in Los Angeles County for the 2020 season were identified this month, public health officials announced Thursday. While L.A. County confirmed its first positive test in a mosquito in early June, two residents of the San Fernando Valley region were reported to now have the virus, according to the county’s Department of Public Health. One case is in an “older adult” with no underlying illnesses who was hospitalized with neuroinvasive disease in early July and is recovering, and the second case was detected in late July in a healthy blood donor, whose positive blood units were discarded, officials said. The case count excludes Long Beach and Pasadena, since cases identified in those cities are reported by their loc...

See Alanis Morissette’s Daughter Sabotage Her ‘Ablaze’ Performance on ‘Fallon’ – Rolling Stone

Alanis Morissette channeled mothers across the world during quarantine when she performed with her daughter in tow on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which will air on Thursday night. Morissette and her band joined the late-night show virtually to debut “Ablaze,” off her ninth studio album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road, which is out Friday. Posted up in what looks to be an enviable library, the singer holds her daughter in her arms as she sings. The toddler predictably steals the show — and Morissette’s headphones. Just like the clip reflects as she holds her child, Morissette’s song is a dedication to her children, where she sings about their strengths and encourages them that they can persevere even when conflict arises. “My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaz...

Demi Lovato Gives Touching Intro to Shea Diamond at GLAAD Media Awards – Billboard

Demi Lovato appeared during the 2020 GLAAD Media Awards livestream on Thursday (July 30) to offer some heartfelt words of support to the LGBTQ community, trans youth in particular. "To all the trans youth – I want you to know you matter," Lovato said. "Do not let anyone -- much less our government -- fool into thinking you are anything less than perfect." Noting the "outrageous discrimination" faced by trans people of color in America, Lovato introduced one of that community's fiercest voices -- Shea Diamond. The stunner singer and her socially distanced band banged out the celebratory anthem "I Am America," which is the theme song for HBO's We're Here and one of our favorite LGBTQ songs of the year. Watch the 31st annual GLAAD Media Awards below.
