SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — San Francisco city officials are predicting another large surge in coronavirus cases. To get ahead of the curve, the city announced its building a new temporary hospital to free up beds for COVID patients. The new hospital will open for non-covid patients who need short-term medical care or observations. San Francisco’s health director isn’t sugar coating things. On Thursday, he said we are in a “major surge” of coronavirus cases, which is why the city is opening a new facility on Gorgas Avenue in the Presidio, to be proactive, rather than reactive. A Chicago woman who last month became the nation's first COVID-19 patient to undergo a double lung transplant said Thursday that she woke up days later, unaware about the surgery and unable to "recognize my body." Mayra Ramirez said that before she fell ill she was an independent, active person who moved from North Carolina to Chicago in 2014 to work as a paralegal.
